    Hello,
    sorry to ask strange question, but could you tell me the engine dimensions, with manifolds, alternator etc?
    I'm dooing some research before starting swapping fords 1,6CVH with gearbox.

    The hillclimb season has now finished for us with great results and personal best times at both Shelsley Walsh and Prescott. Froglet will be back in the garage for a revamp over the winter but before that we are bringing him down to the festival. See you on Saturday :silvertri

    I found a thread on a classic car forum where some people were worried that as old parts were no longer available, anything fitted could be seen as a modification. Someone then said that as the originals aren't available and replacements are an OEM equivilent, it was allowed. I'm not sure what the deal is with performance replacements though?
    On the rear of my old car, I fitted the Bilstein sport coil springs and dampers, so better than OEM. The front was all standard.

    Jake, for what you have in mind, none of this applies. It is applicable to those replacing entire systems, not components within systems. So if you grafted on the front end of an Elise say, to a fortwo, then notification required. To change a spring to a lower stiffer type on the standard smart suspension, no problem. Could even be classed as repair. Ditto engine.
    Last word is as the OEM would see it. Therefore expect smart to view all 600/700cc engines as suitable fitments, but clearly they would disown the MR2 or 1275 A-Series as not intended fitments.
    Biggest bugaboo of it all is absolutely no shell cutting allowed. Even enlarging the engine access slot for clearance for carbs/filters a non starter. Even if on points everything else was OK.

    Re suspension. Spax kit that I helped develop is a direct replacement. No mention of "performance" as it can replace all of the shocks and springs or just dampers or just the springs. The "brabus" kit is also a direct replacement system

    If you don't make any changes to the OEM suspension, brakes steering and bodywork, the car can keep it's registration plate. When I did my engine conversion on Smart1275GT, the only thing that changes was the engine, everything else stayed in place, so just an MOT and away you go. Emissions are based on the engines age, not the cars.

    I tried to find some information on it but it was quite hard to find. It seems Mini's, especially the Z cars ones are talking about it a fair bit.

    It does seem a pain to go through. If they do find out it hasn't been re-registered, then they can crush the car. The only way they would find out though is if an MOT tester noticed it.

    I don't know if the fact the engine code comes from an MR2 will flag anything up when you notify them of the change of engine number, as they must realize that a change in engine could mean a change of other parts too.

    I think "Radically altered vehicles" is a new thing that's only come out in the last couple of years and I don't think it matters how long between each modification, it's all to do with what the end result turns out to be.

    It's a pain that they have bought it out. For me the main annoyance is the registration number. The SVA I imagine would be easy to pass as the car has probably passed similar tests before it was bought to market. It would probably just be a case of making sure the modification work done is structurally sound. I'm also unsure of how they'll sort out the tax band. I think they'll probably use the pre 2001 system of two set rates, under 1549cc and over.

    im sure all you need to do is to approach it in a sensible way, first you register an engine change with the DVLA, which is all above board and if your changing the cubic capacity you tell them of this, then you change the gearbox for which no notification is required, then the driveshafts and ancillaries, again no nothification needed, and lastly your suspension and steering and then any other bits you decided, the only 2 items that actually have identification is the shell and the engine, a good friend of mine once did this with a vw beetle he did an engine and informed DVLA, and then a body change, again informing the DVLA, and hey presto a completely different car, but as he did it by the book they wer not interested. Back then they didnt bother too much, Today they would be on your case a bit im sure
