Re: Yes another roady audio thread....

right right right update time again. 2 days ago I was round a friends and we got onto the topic of sound systems and he was telling me how he had just the day before set up a nice new sound system. anyway I eventually asked if I could quickly pop my headunit in to see how it sounded. It was fab, really really good soooo I now knew my HU was still pluggin away. so I just finished work this morning at 7 and as soon as I got home i took the speaker covers off and took the speakers out and help them in my hand and turned the sounds up and it turns out my speakers have blown:embarasse

so all I need for now is some cheapy co-axles and I'll be happy for now. I now have changed sides and I do want a sub now and it seems the 1600 alpine is the way to go although they have stopped making them it seems, but there are loads on the bay so that won't be a problem. when I do get the sub though I will be upgrading the HU for something with a high and low pass filter as I have now seen how these features work and will need these features when I get a sub.

so here is a link to a page on halfords website and wanna know if any of the top 6 items shown are any good at all as I would like to get some today if possible but its not too urgent so if they are all rubbish I will order some off caraudiodirect

Re: Yes another roady audio thread....

I have had 2 HU's since I took out the Grundig and also some new good co-ax's and as far as I am concerned I havent noticed a big increase in sound quality etc, so I guess a sub is the next way to go for me.

I had a Blaupunkt Active sub in my Fiat 500 and it more than easily did the job. I think I will get the same one fitted again (under the passenger seat).

Halfords: JBL GTO I'd say these out of the ones in the Top 6.

Are you desperate to get them today? Just they're only £25 on CAD (Link to CAD), obviously postage to be added but it should still be a bit of a saving.

If you're good to spend £45, I'd probably go for these CAD- Hertz Dieci £45 with free next day delivery.

Seadragon. The next way to go is an amplifier for your coax's, or going a step further, an amplifier and replace the coax's with component speakers.

ok well I didn't buy today so I reckon I shall take your advise on the hertz ones. have you used them then?

Re: Yes another roady audio thread....

I had (well have as I've not sold it yet) a set of the Energy coax speakers in the rear of my 3-series. It had amplified components in the front and I originally got the Hertz just so that rear passengers had some decent sound on long journeys. I then had to get my front door panels fibre glassed for some different speakers so for a couple of weeks the Hertz speakers in the rear were the only ones fitted in the car and, running off the headunit, they sounded absolutely fantastic and I couldn't fault them at all.

Fantastic thanks for the advise I will probably order tomorrow. Seadragon, I would agree with everything m1pui has said, an amp and some comps will make a drastic difference and shouldn't be too expensive for decent quality parts. However having recently read probably every single audio thread for roadsters on here I have learnt that the majority reccommend getting the alpine SWD 1600 subwoofer.

I was against subs in roadsters as you can read on this exact thread until recently seeing how small this unit is, also it has a built in amp. I have read multiple times that it wont feel like someone is punching you in your back. and now I will be purchasing one in the near future. hope this helps.

                  :censor::censor::censor:

Well I'm sitting here at work browsing through all the old roadster ice threads and speaker threads and keep constantly reading the absolute max depth for speakers should be 55mm. now my new hertz speakers are coming this morning and just checked caraudiodirect to check the depth and its 58mm!!!!

Is it true I might not be able to open my windows without them hitting the speakers???

edit: Yes I really should of checked all this before buying but stupidly didn't.

Re: Yes another roady audio thread....

How much room is there between the front of the speaker and the grille? Could you make an MDF ring and use it as a spacer to mount the speaker on?

Actually, just checking CAD now and i think you've misread the dimensions:
These speakers Hertz Dieci DCX 130
                    Magnet size: 70mm
                    Total depth: 56mm
                    Mounting depth: 52mm

I think they should fit without a problem

Re: Yes another roady audio thread....

ok I was looking at the total depth thingy which is 56MM, mis-typed earlier. So what does the total depth stand for, I assumed it meant from the back of the speaker to the furthest forward point would be that? I dunno.

Anyway, they came today and after removing the cheap blown sony's, I thought just plug these in and were away. No, one of the connecters was far far to small to go around the plug (?) on the speaker, cant remember if it was the + or -. But the wires that plugged into the Sony's were going into a yellow block and the two original wires were going into the back of this block, so I spent ages trying to get them out. As they were in stupidly tight it took me a while but I eventualy got them out so now all there was, was the 2 original wires, to my suprised again one was way to thin so I assume now I have to buy another block thingy (as I broke the other trying to get the original wires out) and the correect size wires? can anyone confirm this.

Also the original wires, which is + and which is - as one is green and yellow and the other grey and brown if I remember correctly.

just in case I am not being clear I shall attempt to show my problem:

on the speakers there is the two metal terminals that stick out which the wires clip onto. my speakers are like this
                      _
                      _]
                      _ = + & - look same size, almost square
                      _]

the wires, both times were like this
                      _
                      _]
one much thinner and won't fit around larger terminal on speaker
                      =]

I really hope this makes sense and someone can confirm that all I need to buy is a little a adapter and new wires with correct ends on?

Edit: Really unsure if my diagrams explain what I'm saying so piccies will be on at 7ish this morning when I'm home from work.

2nd Edit: Been on halfords website and see they sell speaker teminals for a few squid so can I just chop off the two that are currently on the speaker wire. then clip the correct sized ones onto the wire?

Re: Yes another roady audio thread....

I know what you mean. A lot of coaxial type speakers have terminals like this. By having the terminals different shape/size you should never find you've connected the speakers incorrectly. As you've found though, unless you remember which is which or have the original speakers instructions to tell you which is which you're not always sure which is + and -.

A quick look on Sony's website at a manual http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/2699186131.pdf on diagram 2 you can see that the + is the fatter terminal and - is the slimmer one.

The table on Evilutions website should help you with the wire colors too http://www.evilution.co.uk/index.php...&id=76&men=ice

EDIT: That manual isn't specifically for your speakers but the terminals will be standard, at least through Sony.

Also, whats this block you're talking about?

All you need is appropriately sized spade connectors to attach the cable to the speaker terminal, was there none in the box with the speakers?

You could just solder length of wire to extend the original speaker wire so it will reach your speakers.

Re: Yes another roady audio thread....

well a bit of a bodge job later and its certainly better. now a bass drum going off is fine up to reasonable volumes. still the really low notes cause a bit of vibration (already dynamatted) so now do I get the alpine SWD1600 or a better headunit.

this is what I'm currently using: http://www.dvbcaraudio.co.uk/product/JVC_KD-G501.html
suprised they're still worth over a £100 as I've had my one at least 4 years. its probably quite dated now so if I did get the sub, without a low or high pass filter would I be getting the full benefit of the sub? or with a better head-unit would it make any difference without a sub? will all get done in the end its just which would make more difference for the time being?

                          cheers

Re: Yes another roady audio thread....

Is it vibration/ratles from the panels or is the speaker distorting at volume? If it's vibration through the panels then, bar more sound deadening, you're probably going to have to live with it.

Generally, I'd say go for the headunit first as your current headunit doesn't seem to have any provision for filtering sound to the speakers so trying a new headunit and seeing if that lessens the vibes would be the way I'd go. However the fact is that a sub would make more of a difference to the sound and you'd probably enjoy it more, but you would still have the rattles from the doors, unless you can set hpf/lpf from your headunit.

So basically, the sub would make more difference, but a headunit would give more flexibility. If you're getting both done eventually it shouldn't really make too much difference to you, probably the best way to look at it is which is the least expensive (my guess would be the sub) and do that first then when funds allow get the best headunit you can afford.

EDIT: Don't know if it's of interest, but this is slightly shallower than the Alpine. http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/pion...1a-p-5305.html
Not sure how much the Alpine's go for to compare it to though
