Tom Tom , if you shop around there are usually good deals on re-cons/returns these offer good value for money and carry a full warranty

Good place for info is gpsworld's forum

A nice up to date road atlas, none of this sat nav nonsense!! Drive with your eyes wide open, not blindly following a screen telling you were to go.

You only have to pay to keep the maps updated. And to be honest, it's not really worth it. Maps don't change that much.

If your career involves traveling the country, then yes, update them. If it's confined to the local area, then don't bother.

I dont have to pay to update my Tomtom Go520, just connect to the pc and it updates automatically via Tomtom Home. The only extra costs once youve bought it are if you have traffic or speed camera updates as far as i know.

Nope not maps either, all done via map share which doesnt cost anything. You only have to pay if you want to buy a map thats not on your device.

My Tomtom only had UK and Ireland when i bought it so i had to buy the Western Europe map, i think it cost me about £35 but all the map updates are free.

I think thats how much I paid for my map updates. I get 4 updates a year.

I need them in my job...
