I got bored of waiting and just connected it to the speedo CAN HIGH and LOW cables, everything now works perfectly, the unit dims when the lights are on too

Interesting, mine doesn't dim at all!! Where did you find the can high and low to connect those 2 wires to? I reckon that looks like,e it might be worth a bit of investigation as far and mine goes!!
