Agree with AndyM.

I tried to watch a potter movie. . got about 10mins in and thought I was watching CBBC Very poor continuity and quality.

As for the books, tried one of them too. erm . . . .its a kids book, written for kids? (I also saw so many sublte nods/borrows towards Pratchett, Adams et all, and JK does say that she is a fan of Pratchett . . hmmm)

Hype over content for me, and yes I did try and get on with it, just saw a poor dumbed down version of the books I love.

(That will start the hate mail. But my opinion and I stand by it)

I applaude you for you Literary insight.Dont forget it was originally set in a time where, gay meant plain Happy(no offence intended)Giving a kid in the street a kid wasnt the start of a child abuse witchhunt and virtually all cars were black, scince then loads of indigenous peoples have been discovered living in thew stone age so why not in a Dump in England.Crazier things have happened.I read it for the 1st time in 67 and keep reading it from time to time, pure escapism.

I tried to do the same withe same result, binjob.I do think that once you read a book that the films follow it dont come up to scratch as its your own minds eye image formed from the written words. The one exception to this is possibly the LOTR trilogy, with the amount of reader research that was done and all that preproduction work has ensured it to be as close as possible to the book(well i thought so)and the images that i had formed in the course of reading the book. Not many films can boast that!!!

I agree about LOTR. Although there were quite a few changes. But seeing as Peter Jackson did such a passionate job all can be forgiven.

Also some scenes only really work on the screen;-

Pippen singing to the Steward of Gondor while intercut with the stewards son and his men riding into certain death at the order of his father

The Hobbits bowing to the King only to be stopped by the King and told "you bow to no men" and having the King and everyone else bow to them. . . lumps in throat at those bits.

Not forgetting the fantastic line;-

"Still only counts as one"
(If you havent seen the third film I wont give away when this happens, but it had the screening I saw in fits of laughter)

My comment;

Just to clarify. I didnt read Harry Potter more than a paragraph. I just found it to be too much a 'check brain at door' style in the writing. The comment above was reffering to the . . .erm . . .tribute JK Rowling shows to all my favorite writers (Pratchett especially).

Like DSMunky says: I also am a fan of Clive Barker and Weaveworld was my first book, many have followed. But LOTR and The Hobbit are also proudly stationed on my shelves.

I do defend the readers of Harry Potter, though. My paperbacks are like those in the library, torn and worn out, so many times I have read them allready. But ok, everybody his own taste. For the fact of calling it a Childs book: I still enjoy being a bit adolescent some times...

No problem with you defending Harry Potter. But I just think the press her go on far too much about them being these fantastic books that everyone should read.

I gave one a try and found it disticly lacking for my taste.
Try a Pratchett book if you like Potter that much. It will force to think that much harder, but well worth it.

He's also done some fantastic short stories my favourite of which is "The sea and all the little fishes". Totally fantastic story, very clever & very, very funny (Its about a witches anual competition)

I note the LOTR references and that has always taken pride of place on my bookshelf, various editions in various states of array, + the full works by his son Christopher explaining his fathers writings in great exhaustive detail and the radio plays of The Hobbit and LOTR, which are fantastic companions for long road journeys, in addition to numerous beasteries and encyclopaedia maps etc and the extended edition DVDs Thankyou Mr Jackson, if you really love the book as I do then sod the expense and get the Harper Collins Unabridged Audio book it comes on 46 CDs but well worth every penny, the reader Rob Inglis does a remarkable job of reading it, I admit I am getting lazy in my old age, what a fantastic birthday present that was.

for those intrested it's

ISBN 0-00-714132-7

HCCD 874

Has no one else here read any Alistair Reynolds?, absolutely fantastically rich deep stories spanned over hundreds of years and numerous light years

I must admit I am in the process of buying all the associated books and have the silmarillion, unfinished tales, and the main ones. I have just bought the collection of farmer giles of ham, tom bombadil, leaf by niggle and one other (cant remember the name).

Where did you get the full works by Christopher Tolkein, I havent been able to find them as of yet. Although found it in the library.

I was in the fantasy book club a while back and got them then all Hard back

Just go onto www.tolkien.co.uk and look under the books section for the history of middle earth, click on list button etc, You will probably get them cheaper through a book club though!

Anything and everything really!!!!

Pratchett
Douglas Adams
Grisham
Ben Bova - Sci-fi

and my current must-read fave is Lee Childs. He writes about Jack Reacher a former US Army M.P. who lef the army and drifts around America doing odd security work and stuff. Really is good!!!
