Righto - finally got round to doing something about the aftermarket horn i have had sat on my side for nearly 6months.
What i needed.....
1) tough hands
2) replacement horn
3) tie wraps
4) lots of patience
Once i found out where the horn was (thanks to this site and some laying on my back) i decided to go for it.
The horn is behind the front grill, on the left and quite high up in the nose of the car.
I didn't really want to take the front of the car so i decoded to go at it through the front grill.
First issue - removing the grill.
Its attached to the car by plastic clips (very simillar to the ForTwo) but there is no real way of releasing it from the car. it just needs wiggling and jiggling. You just have to be very careful or you will break the clips. One of mine was really stuck and took some prising off. They are obviously only meant to be released with the front off!
There are 8 clips and i found it easiest to remove it by placing my fingers through the grill and gently pulling it (using an up/down, left/right movement)
you can then get a good view of where the horn is located.......
the horn is attached to the car via a metal bracket and it doesn't seem possible to remove it without taking the front off.
the connectors are located on the top (and behind) the horn and have little buttons to press to release them. There is very little cable to play with but on mine, there was an additional 2inches taped to the connector itself so i removed the tape to allow access to the connectors.
and here you can see the buttons that need to be pressed to release them...
once you have access to the connectors, you can connect them up to the new horn and look test it. The horns i bought were a 2 pack twin tone from halfords for about £20 but there just isn't the space for 2 horns in the nose of the car so i picked the deeper sounding tone horn.
i then located it as below and tie-wrapped it to the old horn.
....it looks like its not attached very well BUT the tie wraps (i used 2 connected together) are secured against the bolt on the old horn and the grill shapes on the new one!!
Hope this allows people to try this one so they are no longer embarrased to use their horn in public
