  • My First Service....

    Hi,

I'm looking for some general advice.

I am not too far from my first service since i bought my Roadster back in July...say another month and a half or so....

I live in Rugby in the Midlands an am looking for all the options for servicing... I would like to have a service history that has some 'value' or recognised generally.

Do smart R us in Nottingham have a smart recognised service capability?

Apart from these, who else could I look for to carry out my service in the midlands area??

    Thanks in advance!!

Yep, should be! Unless it's a C service due. I'm pretty sure that flashes up 2 spanners as well (don't think there's a third spanner symbol, but wouldn't swear to it!)

If you let us know the year, and whether it's been serviced yearly, someone will confirm.

        Cheers

there is no 'c' service (technically), they just add in a fuel filter change and charge more for an extended 'b' service.

In retrospect, I suppose "supercalafragalisticexpialadocious" wasn't a great "safe word..."

Aye, but most of the indie websites do list the price of a 'C service' and it's generally known that a C service should come after the 2nd A service (I think!).

If it's a C service that's due, surely Droagster should be told, even if it's not an 'official' service? It does seem to be a recognised service that most people have who regularly service their car.

yes, you're right, which is why I said 'technically', and stated the extended 'b' service

the c service measure got dropped a year or so after the roadsters introduction, the service manuals do show a C service in the books but smart apporve A - B - A - B - A - B etc............. just always get your spark plugs changed every service is the best things for these little engines

nope, I think these got changed when they dropped it, as the latter manuals definately don't have a c ervise reference in there.

I am on 35400 miles on the clock. I have just been looking through previous owners papers, the car had smart 1st service at 6940miles, and as far as i can tell the second smart service was at 24532 miles :-S ..... don't know what happened there!!!

It then had an A service at Mercedes at 30151 miles, so i must be due a B service.

Does servicing it at places Smarts R us get a recognised service, as mentioned what are my options more locally to Rugby?

a service is a service, it doesn't matter if it's at a dealer or not. to be frank, you're much more likely to get a better service at somewhere like SRU than you are at a dealership!

Good point, i just want somewhere reliable hat will do the job they say they are and close-ish to home.....and from what i can tell SRU is closest non-Merc centre around here.

if you have a trusted local garage, they can do it too if you like?! though they probably don't know smarts, but you could leave it with them.
                          the schedule should include:

Remember, maniacs card = discount @ SRU

                            Re: My First Service....

The service book on my 450 for 2 just shows A and B services, with a brake fluid change every 2 years.

Leads me onto a question though, do you not need to renew the coolant ever so often in these cars?

Droagster - if you are in doubt about the service history, ring a merc agent and ask, they should be able to look up when yours was serviced on the computer. If one was done but not logged in the book (that was the case on mine, they stamped it but didn't put mileage or date on!!) then you can get them to correct that.

I'm in 2 minds about official servicing now. There is something to be said for dong the simpler jobs yourself like the oil, plugs, filters etc, then getting a specialist to do the other things. At least you have peace of mind that essential things like what oil and how much is put in etc are done properly as you are bound to take more care that a busy dealership.

I have had many cars over the years and most I have serviced mainly myself, with dealer top ups on big things like cambelts etc (not that the smart has that). When I come to sell so far I've never had an issue with self servicing when you speak to people as they can see the car is in top condition and when they understand you care about your car and look after it the lack of a full main history doesn't seem to matter so much. Mileage can be verified by early history when under warranty, and the MOT's. I keep a record of what I did when, and the reciepts for all the parts.

It's all personal choice, and matter of having the tools, time and motivation to do it I guess but for me a mix of good garage and personal servicing is what I'm happy with.

I'd stick with a reputable specialist that is well recommended by others.

                            Good luck.

                            Andy
