  • Now that's really weird !!!

Well the engine has now been rebuilt and upgraded, fitted back into the car and it started first time. Took it for a test run and apart from a high pitched whistling noise (which I will source tomorrow) everything is rosy.

Now this is where it is becoming frustratingly weird, when I come to lock the doors with the key, nothing. Changed the battery and also used the spare key, still nothing.

I get in the car, close the doors and then try the key buttons, erueka, it works !!! but I am sitting in the car.

I get out the car and retry, nothing.

I carried out this process a few times, and it always works when I am inside but not when I am outside.

It does not autolock either after a few minutes, so the point is does anyone have any ideas?

I could stay in the car all night but it's getting a little cold.

Hi - how old is your car? Does it have an infra-red receiver next to the cigarette lighter?

      Hi Smartsparky,

It's a 2002 mk6 city cabby, I'm unsure about the infrared thing by the cigarette lighter.

There has been no elecs for about three weeks whilst I was rebuilding the engine. I did disconnect the elecs from the rear boot lid to remove, if thats any help.

      Cheers

        Hi Derek,

If your car is a 2002 mk6 then it won't have the infra red receiver so don't worry about that!

You will have a key receiver located under the centre tunnel.

There might be a dodgy connection that is making contact when you sit in the car. Have a look - it's worth a check!

          Thanks Smartsparky,

I'll have a look tomorrow, it may have been disturbed when I unbolted the passenger seat to disconnect the connector that serves the enfine components, (I did check the other connectors just in case).

In the meantime I thought I'd do something simple and I have disconnected the battery in the hopes for a reset, although it's a bit wet outside at the mo, and I'm missing X Factor !!

Re: Now that's really weird !!!

            Hi Smartsparky,

Done what you suggest today and the key receiver looks in good order and well connected. I have nailed it down to a proximity thing, as it works sweet as a nut within a couple of feet of the receiver, I tried it outside of the car with the window down and leant in, it works.

So now I'm questioning the batteries as I could not how new the 'new' battery I used,as it was in the pack when I brought the car some time ago.

One final thing, if I need to replace the key receiver would MB need to recode the key? as what looks intially as a £10 jobbie could escalate the bill somewhat.

            Thanks

            Derek

Re: Now that's really weird !!!

Have you tried the old method of holding the key against your jaw as you press the button?
It can increase the distance the key will work.

I knew I was doing something wrong !!! I've left teethmarks on the keyfob trying to press the buttons harder.

Just to close this thread off, the cause was rubbish batteries, I visited MB today who accepted £2.60 of my hard earned cash (no subway special today) and now it works from the length of a tennis court, well chuffed but hungry.
