  • Lifetime of Alternator Brushes?

My 2002 Pulse is now up to 110'000 km (~68'000 miles), so I'm wondering when the brushes in the alternator will wear out. It's dreadful to be stranded without a power source, especially in the winter time.:frown:

Does anyone have an idea on how long the brushes are expected to last? Are they a serviceable item?

    Thanks,
    Roland:thanx:

£180 for 2 carbon brushes!! You must be mistaken. This is probably the price for the complete alternator, is it not?

        Re: Lifetime of Alternator Brushes?

My car is at ~187,000Km and alternator is still working correctly!

Other than taking the alternator to pieces and measuring the length of the brushes and comparing them to brand new ones, you won't know how long they last!

I doubt they are available from Smart / MB, but should be available from a place that re-builds alternators and starter motors.

        Regards,

        John

I've never heard of the smart alternator brushes going, usually they just seize.
I'm sure you could find a company to make replacements.

Which they did with "Dilbert" and thus why he owes me very little, even with a brand new Turbo & Full Rebuild......

Mind you, maybe if he were still seized my dumb ass wife would have piled him in the back of a towbar wearing Pug this morning:censor::censor: See the "I Need A MK1-5 Hello Yellow Front Panel" Thread, And Read "Husband Is Going Mad"...... Funny.... I managed about 50 miles in the snow in my Cab and she didn't make it out of our road..... about 25 yds!:censor::censor::censor: on the plus side I taught her a few new words!

That's great to hear. On my other cars the alternator brushes were normally gone at around 150'000 km.
