Full service 180 pounds

A family friend is going to do a full service on our 42, spark plugs, oil filters etc... for 180 pounds, does this seem good value?

its not that cheap tbh, and you would be better spending a couple pounds more for a stamp in the service book

As a comparrison I've jut been quoted 274 for a C service at Smartarsedesign, even with 10% off it's still quite a difference.

Does your fiend own a garage ? does he specialise in smarts ? And should heavens forbid it go tits up is he going to put things right or say .... look I was doing it as a favour , get your own engine replaced.

After all getting a builder to service your car may seem a great deal cheaper than a garage , but he don't know **** all about how to do it.

I like to keep my friends as mates , and get people I'm not too bothered about falling out with to work on my car.

We recently got a B service for our forfour at Smart Milton Keynes for £237 which seem excellent value compared to some of the prices around.

No! If he's a friend who's doing you a favour I'd expect to pay only for the parts and maybe £20 beer money as a thankyou.

2 of my friends on here did it for nothing (I did offer something but they wouldn't take it!)

Servicing prices are mostly made up of labour charges.

You can get everything you need for about £80 from wellsmart meaning he's probably charging you about £50 an hour labour!

£20 spark plugs
£4 oil filter
£12 fuel filter (C service or every two years)
£10 air filter

£62 probably in total from GSF (service parts) and Countrywide (oil)

Buy a decent air filter and save a tenner every service

The parts for a B service come to about £45 for me - labour free!

You need a few basic tools, nothing more. Will he check the hygroscopy of the brake fluid or the pads/discs/shoes/drums?

Erm you keep quoting how cheap it is to service your car and how easy etc, yet you get Wellsmart to do it for you?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I already have an aftermarket filter so a tenner saved there

I'm guessing as with most services after the oil/plugs/filters all you are really paying for are visual checks? I'm guessing the most difficult part of the service is pumping out the oil but the more I read I'm tempted to try it out myself, I've changed oil and brakepads before on other cars.

Unless anyone knows someone in the London area that does servicing at your home? How cheapskate am I :p

Are you sure? Do you have a tracker fitted to my car? Was that private eye hired by you? Are you using the spy satellites to track my movements? If so, I suggest a new tack cos my car hasn't been in any garage for any work since last April's new clutch. I have done three B services on my car myself since then. It passed its MoT too in that period. The reason I know the parts prices is cos I've gone off and bought the parts to service my car!

Oh, it needs a service again - guess where it's going for it? I Bet you won't get the answer right!

Pumping out the oil is easy, once you've bought the pump I'm sure it will pay for itself over time.

The pumping out of the oil is no more difficult that pumping up a bike tyre

Well, I decided to book it in at WellSmart for 225, maybe a tenner off as my airfilter is decent.

118 mile drive for me but I'll make a day out of it
