The general rule is, if it's out of warranty, keep it away from merc!
Rumour has it that the mechanics have only 1 additional days training to work on smarts

In fact I'm surprised they'd need a day!
"Right lads, the engine is at the back, there's actually 6 spark plugs and you have to suck the oil out the dipstick, any questions?"

Re: Servicing in Herts
There are some excellent independants out there, and there are also some excellent main dealers.
Not all independants are good and not all main dealers are bad.
I'd advise you to have a good look at the servicing section of SmartManiacs so you can see the experiences of other members of this website.
As a general rule, independants are cheaper on most things than main dealers because their labour rates are lower, however you may not always have access to the full range of things you'd expect at a main dealer, such as them collecting the car from your home or place of work, or a 'free' valet.
The best advice I can give is find a garage you trust and stick with them.
