Is it possible to change the spark plugs on a 2001 Smart without taking the back bumper, rear wings off? i.e. by only accessing the engine through the top? My car was serviced yesterday and the mechanic claimed he changed them all via the top.

How many plugs did you get billed for???
As said....you gotta take the rear panel off for access to lower 3, so if he hasn't done that take car back & get him to show you how he changed them.....then get the other 3 done asap!

Re: Spark plug change on 599cc petrol
Receipt just says 'plugs'. I have never used this garage before (apart from my aircon re-gas a week ago. At the time I asked if they had experience of Smarts and they said they did as they had recently done two engine rebuilds. I asked 'how many spark plugs does it have?' and they both replied immediately 'six'. So, I booked it in for its B service with them.
Just to confirm then.
1. All mention of this mod to the back end where you can then access the plugs easier only applies to the Roadster.
2. It is 100% impossible to change the bottom plugs without removing the back bumper panel.
Thanks for your input guys. I watched my service at Smartarse of Watford three years ago (a C service) and I saw the back come off but I wasn't sure if this was just because they fixed a broken stud on the turbo. I sat there yesterday waiting for the back to come off and it never did, so on completion I asked "did you change change the plugs just by accessing the engine through the top?" and he said yes he managed.

IMHO there is no way of removing the leads or plugs from the top without damaging the leads, but I will try on Saturday!Fudge!

Re: Spark plug change on 599cc petrol
I'll bet with the back on you could rag the leads out with some long nosed pliars, but it's a cowboy trick, that's for sure (one that's been done on my Roadie before now judging by the state of one of the HT leads). Swapping the plugs after removal and then putting said leads back...It'd be easier to take the back off!!!

Re: Spark plug change on 599cc petrol
When I changed the plugs on my ForTwo I took the rear bumper fascia and aluminium bumper beam off. I can't imagine starting the job without doing so, even if on ramps. It only takes 10 minutes to take these bits off and definitely saves more than 10 minutes in changing the plugs. So in short a real false economy not to prepare the care for easy access. I'm sure there are many garages that have worked on Smart cars but I doubt they are all proficient.
