  • Very worrying noise!!!

    Hey everyone!

Well i took the car to MK Smart and the service was great, very friendly and they even spotted a 'driveshaft seal oil leak' so for peace of mind i told them to just sort it and it was replaced.

Now the car essentially didn't move for the rest of the week (gardening!) and then i drove it down the motorway and back to a friend's yesterday (approx 200 mile total journey) and then this morning, when I pulled away from a standstill, it gave off a worryingly loud metallic rattle, which only occurs in first and reverse gears... :frown:

Now obviously I have gotten in touch with the dealer and they are going to look at it on Saturday (earliest I can get there), so am not driving it until then if i can help it.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have found an oil leak under the car and am worried that the leak is now worse!?!? How much does it take to blow a driveshaft!?!? NOT that I am about to try btw, can't afford major work!

    Thanks!!

    Re: Very worrying noise!!!

Sounds like the exhaust rattling on the valance. My valance doesn't fit properly and does this when in 1st and reverse because the exhaust lifts.

It's possible they've not put the exhaust back on correctly.

MK are very good for service but it's well known that the merc mechanics have little or no training on smarts.....

It could be as simple as the engine hatch not being correctly fitted.

I checked the engine cover in the back window (if that's the cover you are referring to) and it seemed to be screwed down pretty tight, so don't think that is it. also I managed to squeeze under the car (exercise does come in handy!) and the exhaust seemed bolted on pretty tight but the valance around the exhaust seems a bit loose compared to before when it was serviced!?

My bro was watching whilst i moved the car back and forth and he said it looked like the exhaust moved, so it might be that?? Regardless it's going back to the garage and am going to ask to go in with them. That, and the oil that appears to still be leaking from some part I don't recognise in behind the driver side rear wheel (suspect it's the drive shaft??)

Hopefully will get it all sorted soon!

dont normally get oil coming out if the gear box when you pop off the drive shaft or take out the seal so no idea what is leaking unless they spilt a bit of oil when refilling , my usual party trick with a new 5 litre bottle of oil!

I agree. When Chris first got her fortwo it had the same. Found out that the rear panels and exhaust valance were not on properly and rattled against the exhaust in first and reverse.

Check that the rear panels are tight and not adding to the rattle.

                Rightyho update time!!

Took the car back to Mercedes and they spent an hour shaking and bouncing (that's what it looked like), lifting it up and down on the ramps and the conclusion is as I suspected....

a knackered bolt holding on the heatshield (behind the turbo?)

So anyway, got a quote to replace it - 230 squid!!

Can anyone do the work or give me a guide how to do it myself? am a quick learner just need somewhere to get it up on a ramp and a day to do it - Merc reckon three hours' work plus the part.. any ideas? Fudge?

Am just a bit concerned as it was fine til it went in for a small service then one drive later it started!

Given that Merc labour is usually priced at £90/hr, £230 looks like a discounted labour rate of £70/hr and a £20 bolt.
