  • gearbox drain plug

I'm in the process of changing my exhaust and thought while I've got the arse off I'd check the gearbox oil, The hex hole for the allen key is totally round! Anyone had this problem and how did you solve it? only thing I can think of is drilling it out and using a stud extractor, any ideas

    I'd avoid drilling it:redface:

won't a extractor bit fit straght in there ? or is there not enough depth for it to start digging at the sides?
Maybe grind the end off one so it'll fit?

I'd avoid the drill too, you'll get swarf and **** everywhere..... can you cut a slot in to it (the face) and use a mahoosive screw driver?

I didn't really want to drill it for reasons as stated , but what worries me is why has it been rounded in the first place? The only places it has been "serviced" Is smart of Milton Keynes and Smartarse at Watford, has it at some time been put back cross threaded, or are they normally that tight?

dealers are sometimes butchers, cos they are pushed to complete the job in less than the book time.
I'd guess whoever did it didn't have the right size tool.

I don't know why people feel the need to put sump/drain plugs on so tight and with the wrong tools, there's really no need.
The right torque is not a lot at all

A hammer and a chisel will get it out if all else fails. Just be careful! Obviously you will have to buy a new one afterwards as the old one is going to be a "bit" danmged :p

            Waiting the reply!
            Regards,

and if you fail to move the old plug , you'll be able to pop a hole in the casting with the aforementioned tool

true but i think dealers think a torque wrench is an optional extra, even if they did have/use one it would only have two settings. FT and VFT
