  • painting going wrong

iv got a silver grill that i want to paint black which iv given to a mate of mine for painting. there is one problem however, every time he puts the laqure on the paint underneath goes all orange peeley. its happened several times and the last time he went all the way back to the plastic, primered it, painted it and the laqured it and it went pear shaped. he is using the same paint a laqure that he used on his bikes plastic pannels. i've suggested that he use the 2 in 1 paint, but im not sure if it will go the same way.
any ideas that i could pass on to him?

I had the same problem when I repainted some boat parts.:censor:
It isn't Plastikote paint by any chance.
If so it is to do with the time between coats. If I remember correctly you have to apply coats < 20 mins apart or > 24 hours.
Read the info on the tins.:goodlk:

Where are you doing it? Inside a nice warm dry garage or outside in the cold and the rain?

if the paint is opening up so you can see the layer below....your mate has a BIG silicone problem and should get it looked into.....he'll know what you mean when you tell him....ask if he's started using something new recently....or maybe your paint is contaminated....get him to start again using his paint that he knows is good....if that comes out OK then it's your paint at fault...if his is the same he needs to look at his workshop.......

as you said he went back to plastic, and it still did it. or its the plastic primer you are using. use a 1k solvent plastic primer. and then just dust a couple of coats of normal solvent primer . when applying basecoat again ,light coats if using solvent , dont over load as you can trap solvents and coarse solvent pop. if using water base wet coats but allow plenty of time to flash off. laquaer, if 1k, 3 or 4 wet coats 3 mins flash off. if using 2k then 1 grip coat and then one full one , job done. make sure air lines have water traps on them, or a trap on your gun. clean dry warm. if you follow these steps then you should be ok. if it does it again , its time to bin all the paint and get new products. you want.. 1k plastic primer, 1k primer , 1k solvent basecoat or water base silver. 1k laq or 2k. any other products will just cause you more problems. some barcoat might be a good product to get he should no what this is , if he knows his stuff. :goodlk:

                  I would also say,

                  1) need more heat in the paint shop
                  2) Is he putting too much paint on?

                  Ian.

he sorted it now but thank for the info! should have really up dates this thread.
its got waht he cals a fake shine so he need to flat it back and then polish it, but he asked me to put it on the pannel first so its easier for him, so as soon as i get my fog lights itll go on and a few before and after shots will be taken.
