  • Im back- but with a problem!!!!

    Hey all,

Unfortunately forgot my password hence the new name!

Have been having a blast with my pink smartie however 2 weeks ago my engine just died! =( i have had some unbelievable quotes to have this fixed and just cant believe it could be so much.

Unfortunately after 5 years I no longer have Darren to help me with this sort of thing and i am completely at a loss and wondered if any fellow owners have had a new engine or know any good places at good prices to get this done.

I do know it wont be cheap but some of the quotes ive received seem astronomical and makes me think its not worth the money.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

what sort of quotes have you been getting and from where?
sometimes it's worth paying the extra for a proper job and a warranty.
and are you sure that the engine is the issue.

What happen? did it just stop and won't start? or is it misfiring?
how many miles has it done?

In retrospect, I suppose "supercalafragalisticexpialadocious" wasn't a great "safe word..."

Hi I took it to the nearest car garage that would deal with smarts near me! alot of them wouldnt even have a look at it!!

i was quoted £3000 and even though we've put alot of work in it doesnt seem that it would be worth paying that much, the car has covered 49,000 miles roughly.

it was a really loud knocking noise, it starts but the noise is hurrendous like a really loud banging...its horrible!!

can you tell where on the engine it is coming from - looking from the rear is it on the left hand side of the engine (in which case it could be a sheered clutch plate - its clutch would slip too if this has gone) and if the middle or right, it'll be the engine itself.

Whatever, best not to drive it just now. An engine rebuild will be about £1000 plus sensible to put a new clutch and turbo on - making it about £2000 all in.

Clutch on its own will be £500-800 depending on any damage inside.

I'd say that's a broken clutch assembly if its "banging" but still running......

it is quite noisy (lol) too when it does it - but at least it's a cheap-ish fix if it is.

Expect to replace the clutch speed sensor too but most importantly, the longer you drive it the more damage you do to the crank and the casings. The noise is the clutch rattling about inside the bellhousing.

I agree with Messy & Fudge on this.
My car all of a sudden started to make a loud knocking sound. I thought it was a big end bearing or something. Then it just wouldn't go into gear. Turned out to be the clutch had broken. Car had only done about 34,000 miles!

The reason the clutch wouldn't operate, the centre springs had inverted!
Caused by the broken straps in the pic below.

With these straps broken it allows the clutch to wobble around & causes the knocking sound.:goodlk:
