  • Front headlamp bulb for "smart passion"

Whye does it cost so much to have a bulb fitted in the front headlight on my daughters SMART CABRIOLET PASSION?
the bulb cost maybe £2 and they are asking for £100 for fitting it. ive looked
in the manuel and it says that they have to be fitted by the local dealer.
She took it to a specialist High Performance Car Repair garage for a bulb some 12 months ago and he didnt charge her for fitting it, but told her not to bring it back again because it means almost dismantling the front of the car
just to get at the bulb, and when she took it for a MOT and service to the local garage he told her that the front bracket on the headlight had snapped
or been broken by someone trying to fit a bulb sometime previously. the cost
of that service and MOT amounted to over £400 which when you think about its nearly £10 per week for a whole year.
Is it true that its really difficult to get at the bulb as the garage suggested
or are they out to make a quick buck.
and could I do it myself taking my time. any instructions anywhere to help me do it, that would help. Thanks guy (and dolls) Ted

In retrospect, I suppose "supercalafragalisticexpialadocious" wasn't a great "safe word..."

as for the brackets snapping, it depends which one? it might just be the adjusted has popped out.

There's some debate over how easy it is to do without taking the front of the car off. I've got slim arms and I can't do it

I tried it through the service hatch and managed to drop the clip so I've now taken to removing the front panel off the car. It's a bit long winded but if you can't manage it or drop the clip, you end up having to do it anyway.

It's suprisingly easy to do and your daughter should be able to manage it quite easily with the right tools. It's just a case of unscrewing everything in the right order, it's not heavy but can sometimes take 2 people to ensure it's pulled off ok.

£400 for a service, mot and headlight repair was good value for money if they replaced the bracket!

and if you do remove the front panels, try this:
