Hi everybody, i am a newbie here.

Have just bought a very low mileage passion, in superb nick am very happy with it and getting to know about it.One thing is bothering me though.
When i switch the lights on the side lights come on then if your lucky the dip and main activate.
    Question.
I can hear what seems to be a servo everytime one switches from dip to main and visa versa. Normally lights have a solanoid.
2)could the servo if it is one have a lazy solanoid or switch.
3( anybody had same problem and managed to cure it

    Hi - to smartmaniacs!

By the sounds of it, there are two issues here:

    1) The whirring sound you hear will probably be the headlight beam level adjuster. Underneath the indicator stalk there is a wheel. Try turning this to see if it cures the problem. If not, then your headlight motors will need a clean. This may help:

    2) The unpredictability of which lights come one when you turn the stalk is probably to do with the contacts in the indicator stalk. Again, this guide may be of help:

I'm going to have to do this, my lights are getting terrible! I've done the drill a hole and spray with cleaner trick , don't last long. Do you have to re-grease before reassembly?

It just helps with the free movement of the stalk. Without the grease, the stalk will be a little bit stiffer to operate.

Lol! is that so. I don't think you got what he meant.
Yes Chuffer, you should regrease the contacts (not shown in the FQ guide) as it stops the arcing that caused the problem in the first place. Without it, it will soon fail again and is no better than drilling a hole and spraying contact cleaner into it.

Anyway, you can buy replacement self adjusters exactly the same as the ones in the smart headlights from VW.

              Arcing? Yeah right.
