    Re: 'A' Service Cost?

I'm not complaining, I'm asking if there is a cheaper local dealership. I am quite happy for a service on the car, and I expect to pay for it.

Just like when I'm searching for insurance - if I think a quote is too high, then I'll look else where.

And when go shopping, if I think the groceries are too expensive I'll shop elsewhere.

And when I fill up with diesel, I'll search for the best local price.

That's not complaining. It's finding a good deal.

And no, I don't go with the cheapest. I go for the middle ground.

Yep , almost certainly - well, ANY smart official dealership
you can't take it to an indy

although they can't do that if the car is new, they can when it's a used warranty they are offering

thanks , your a star. wont be servicing it till the end of the year though i dont think, i dont really go that many miles. i think so long as i get it done once within the year of owning it, it keeps it validated , so smart servicing it is then

your warranty will nearly be out by then anyway won't it?

I'd be inclined to get any warranty problems sorted just before the service is due and then bugger off to an indy and **** the last couple of months of the warranty off

for a better price most of the time

The approved used warranty is an insurance and they're allowed to stipulate where you get it serviced. For the normal new car warranty they can't, as long as its to manufacturers spec and VAT registered.

Oh and an A service at smart of Brighton is £190!

                Re: 'A' Service Cost?

Our 451 Passion MHD was 1 year old recently and was due its A Service based on time rather than mileage (only 9,000 miles on the clock). As the car is on a PCP through Smart Finance they require that the car be serviced at an 'approved garage' - we all know what this means! I know that EU Law has addressed the issues around this for cars privately owned but not I gather for cars effectively owned by Smart Finance where there is a clause in the Finance Agreement.

As the car was bought from Smart Bristol so I approached them for the first service. Initial quote was £179. I baulked at this (for an oil change and a suspension check) and challenged it.

After some discussion (I also involved the sales staff as I had bought the car there). I pointed out to them that other smart dealerships were charging in the region of £93.

Long and short of it I negotiated them down to £118 - yes more than I would have paid up in Birmingham but convenience of going locally won the day.

The standard of the service was quite good although having being promised (3 times now) a return phone call to discuss outstanding issues I am still waiting.

I understand that charges at a mainstream dealer with the sort of overheads (and demands from the manufacturer) are going to be higher and there is a premium to pay for all that free coffee and WiFi. You have to accept this but there is a limit and £179 was way beyond mine. £118 was acceptable.

On another note I have just had my 450, 10 year old passion C serviced by MasterTech Assist in Manchester (nearest indy to where the car was on load to my daughter) and was impressed with them. The C cost £205.

At the end of the day if we all pay high charges without at least saying something then they will continue. As long as other Smart dealership (smart of Woverhampton) are competitive then we need to vote with our feet.

                Jim

true but im going to buy another year warranty (£299) so-long as i purchase it within the year of buying the car i can do this

which i plan to do next feb. to be honest smart havent been too informative with me so am struggling with probably simple things, which is why im so glad this place exists

                    Re: 'A' Service Cost?

I know this thread is a year old, but hey -
                    179 GBP is expensive ?!
If you guys would like to have a good lough -
Here, in Israel, these are the prices for a big service :
(note : I've converted the price from "Israeli Shekel" to "GBP" as the rates are today, 17.02.2011)
                    Oil 5w40 : 3.5 litre @ 9.5 GBP per litre = 33.25 GBP
                    Oil filter : 12 GBP
                    Air filter : 26.70 GBP
                    Plugs : 6 units @ 11.20 GBP per unit = 67.20 GBP
Engine cleaning fluid : 14.40 GBP
                    Labor : 3.1 hours @ 38.80 per hour = 120.28 GBP
                    TOTAL : 273.84 GBP
And don't forget the 16% tax here... that's another 43.81 GBP
                    GRAND TOTAL : 317.64 GBP

A service here is small though.
