I am a newbie and need some advice please.
My car changes through the gears upto 4th at 3000 revs in auto mode. However 4th to 5th it generally needs to rev to 3500 to 4000.This is under normal driving conditions and me easing of the pedal to prompt gear change.Surely it should change at 3000 revs when i ease of the throttle. The car is currently at the garage being looked at as it has 12 months warranty. At the moment they are saying this is normal they also state that they cant reset the ecu.{are they trying to fob me off?]
I am driving there courtesy car and the diference is night and day, the courtesy car changes at 2500 to 3000 revs from 1st to 4th and 4th to 5th it happily changes at 3000 revs.
I have a 2008 fortwo passion non turbo. Any advice much appreciated

        Re: high revs

If you think it is wrong, take it back to where you bought it and get them to fix it!

Seriously, If the new Smart is similar to the older 450 version , then the ECU "learns" your driving style. If you use manual and change up at lower revs for a while, the auto will also change up at lower revs, but having said that - the auto tends to use higher revs as standard.

Maybe there is a "software" up date for the ECU which you can have done to make your car nearer to the behaviour of the courtesy car you had?

Another thing that has a bearing on gear changes is the fact on the older 450 version, there were 6 speeds with the first 3 being quite close together and a bigger jump to 4th.

The car is back at the dealer at the moment, getting a door handle replaced. They say that they cannot reset the ecu? The engineer took my car for a run and said it was slow going into 5th gear. So they have sort of agreed there is a problem. Am i within my rights to request a software upgrade as the car is under warranty?Puzzled at why they cannot reset the ecu? From what you said the car, could learn from my driving it in manual for a while? I would presume the 451 would also be able to do this?

They can reset it by simply taking the battery off for 5 mins surely?

Trickywoos changes up too early. Yours changes up too late. Is what I meant.
My car is a 450 Pure, no auto function so no comparison possible.
Do have your car back from Weirs now?

Yes and there is no difference, also there is now an annoying rattle coming from the drivers side door handle at 55mph plus. Not happy i would of thought they could of done something. The car has 14000 miles on the clock and they said it did not need changing til 30000 miles.I did change it ,you should of seen the state of the filter and they reckoned i could drive another 16000 miles on it.Does not install a lot of faith in them.As i said not happy but rant over lol.

Presumably that is the air filter you are talking about. I have a Pipercross and clean it between services, twice as often as recommended. The roads we drive on are just so dusty is our problem I think.
Have you tried the battery disconnect and retraining it either by changing manually or very gentle driving in auto? - or what ever is recommended.
I had the battery off mine last week, and first time out after, went into first corner, 2 x downchanges into 4th, on the throttle - and nothing, nothing, nothing, and still nothing, then after about 3 seconds got some power. Car had completely forgotten cornering sequence and had to relearn. Only happened like that once and got better and better as day progressed.
It reminded me of what it was like when I first got it.
