  • Service recommendations - Midlands

My newly acquired Smart car needs a service and MOT in September (I'm planning and saving :empty: ahead). The car has service history from Mercedes in Coventry but they don't seem to be very highly rated on here and when we visited to look at Smart cars we were completely ignored

According to Merc in Coventry I need a B service and brake fluid change which currently costs £265 with MOT as they have a £20 off offer on (sorry that sounds weird!). This sounds quite expensive but I have no experience in this area so I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for places in the Midlands? What sort of price should I be looking at? Am I best of taking a trip to Smarts R Us in Nottingham?

    All answers gratefully received

Mercland in Nuneaton are very good and competitive on price too. They recently did my exhaust on the ForTwo

Although the B service is the more involved, requiring (6) plugs, air and oil filter and oil change, Shop around for the best deal
(The a is pretty much just an oil and oil filter change)
(I'm planning and saving :empty: ahead)
well done you, you'd be surprised some people don't think about it and then moan when it jumps up on them.
And good news you're changing the brake fluid too

Coventry are pap, we got Honky from there and I had to correct the salesman on several points /smugmode.

You're always paying over the odds for a below par service from merc

Until recently I would have said there's nowhere nearby but Wemorgan has come up trumps with somewhere local (we should be trying them out soon )

And nope, you're not best taking a trip to smarts r us, they have a less than glowing reputation around here, they don't even specialise in smarts anymore.

BTW, Mr Poo (my smart) used to live in Grandborough, you might have seen him around

Got anything to back that up??

I bet they love you , have you ever used their services ?
I say leave them alone unless you have personal experience of them and their work

and I wonder why they still sponsor this site then

Nope, not after hearing at least ten people (and I mean people I've met in person, not posts on here) report shoddy service from them.

I think you will find that sRu DO still do smarts....they trade under name 'Road track race' now though!

However their ex mechanic (Alan Watt) set up on his own a while back and he is probably the best place around that area to take your smartie to!

He's in Heanor....Al's Autos...I can give you his number if you want it (not sure if he's sponsoring this site...will check!)

....Cant seem to find him as a sponsor so I'm not allowed to advertise his services, I'm sure you can email me if a search cant find his details!!! I had a full service, inc brake fluid change done by Al last year and it was still under £200 inc vat. (Does a very good job as well!)

SrU get bad press, 'star' mechanic leaves & starts his own indy.

I gave him a lot of money - once. I won't do so again after the work proved to be dangerously sub-standard...

Thanks for your replies and take it easy, I didn't mean to stir up a hornets nest!! Seriously though, a little sparring is fun!

I think I will give the recommended places a call and see what gut feel I get as a starter.

I'm a bit biased towards Al's autos as I was born in Heanor and my Mum and Dad grew up in the area but it is an hour and a half's drive.

StevRS - I'm a little confused.com about your comments Did you employ Al or did he work on one of your cars?

MsPoo - what does your Smart look like and why is he called Mr Poo? Is he brown?!? My Smart is called Gus because of the number plate - BF56 GYS. Hubby suggested something much ruder that I can't mention in polite conversation

The might still do smarts but they don't specialise in them (note what I actually said), their website makes that clear.
