    Re: Which Forfour for me?

The 1.5 Diesel (95 hp) is a fantastic car, and imho the best of the bunch. If you want fun, it can be remapped to rocket proportions, and still be economical.. 45 to 50mpg regardless of how you drive!

      Re: Which Forfour for me?

Having driven a variety of forfours I still don't understand why people like the diesel - sure they are quick and apparantly economical but they sound dreadful, have zero refinement and an incredibly small rev-range. If economy is absolute then there is merit, but on 6,000 miles per annum you are better off buying the nicest low-mileage petrol passion with the best history you can find.

      My two-penneth worth?

1.1 12v - not quick but nice and light and makes a good noise. Ideal as a second car but not perhaps as the main motorway muncher.
1.3 16v - best engine; punchy, refined, smooth and economical
      1.5 16v - just like the 1.3, I couldn't tell the difference...
      1.5Cdi 95 (not driven a 68) - just toooooooo noisy!

I've driven manuals and softouch and would prefer the manual for use but the softouch does have a long 6th gear for economy and additional refinement on the motorway.

As for space, you'll need to work out where the sliding rear seat needs to be positioned for the adults to be comfy and the rear-facing child seat to fit behind, then decide if the boot is big enough. However, you could always drop the one side of the split seat down. If you aren't that tall this shouldn't be an issue (I'm 6'4", so it is!)

We have our fortwo for sale due to the arrival of our son (now 3 months old) as a 2-seater car is proving impractical for me to use at work. I would like to replace it with a forfour, my wife fancies a Renault Clio but we are fortunate in that my Audi A2 is more than big enough as a family car (currently being used by my wife though...) having just taken us and everything my son owns to the Lake District for a week in a caravan. Roofboxes are awesome and if you find them expensive then borrow a friends for the price of a beer or two.

You must have driven a knackered one mate. The folks that have been in mine have been really suprised to learn that its a Diesel cos its so smooth and quiet.
I was lent a 1.1 when my fortwo had to go in for a bodge by mercs, and believe me, although I decided from that moment on I would someday have a forfour, it certainly wasnt because it was quiet or refined! lol...

Forfours are great fun to drive and very rare too... we got some seriously strange looks of bemusement at the weekend - a 'Tube' of 17+ forfours.

I still get questions about my Alice, people just don't know what they are. lol

It was a demo with a few thousand on the clock. My 3-pot A2 isn't exactly serene when extended, but spanners in a food mixer it 'aint!

still say it must'v been knackered! My next door neighbour has a three pot A2, and compared to mine, it does sound like a sack of junk! My neighbour is very impressed at the Forfours ability to out accelerate him and after swapping cars for a run to the supermarket just to try each others out, I am defo glad I have the smart!

Oh.... one more thing... (but concerning a fortwo) On a camping weekend in the cotswolds sometime ago, one of our fellow clubmembers, (cant remember his name) stupidly pulled out of the campsite, onto the main road, and into the path of an A2. Bang! Smart+ = bent trackrod end. A2 = Stove in grill, Aluminium crash bar, bent front wing, and destroyed bonnet!

My point in recalling this incident? I dont have one really. I just like telling people!

One of us is, and youve not been in my car! lol... Anyway El Stigo, no point in carrying on this exchange, cos we both want the world to know that our motor is the best, and we could go on forever like that! I expect we'll meet up sometime at some smart meet or another, then we can argue the point over a pint!

                          Re: Which Forfour for me?

Thanks everyone, you've been really helpful. This is a great forum!

We've decided on the softouch, as we do daily city driving and the reviews I have read say it is great for that.

We've seen these three on Autotrader that are all Passions and have similar age and mileage:

                          1.3: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...1604&logcode=p

                          1.5 petrol: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...7187&logcode=p

                          1.5 diesel: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...5766&logcode=p

My wife likes blue, but I think the white looks awesome, and it seems pretty rare. She's worried the diesel will be clattery, but I'm tempted by the cool colour and the better mpg.

                          Help!

Which one would you go for?

                              Buy the white 1.5 diesel.
The colour is indeed very rare.
Failing that go for the 1.5 petrol due to the multi function steering wheel.

It's a fantastic forum dedicated to the smart forfour.:goodlk:

Oh, in regards to boot space, my wife is tiny, so I think we could put the baby seat behind her and have the back seats fully forward. If we were to do this, would we be able to fit a bigger buggy in, or are we still talking a compact buggy only? (We want a buggy that faces us, and the compact one so kindly showed to us on this forum is front facing.)
