    Re: Which engine

Ps. Do they all need thrashing ? I read somewhere that the 1.1 needs to be thrashed to get the best from it, and I know from experience that 1.3 only comes to life when you boot it, which is the reason for my original question. My (boring) yaris T is just as happy to pootle around as it is to be driven 10/10ths. I need something with same characteristics that is cheaper to run, smooth and most important interesting to attend my local classic car club. (I can no longer afford to own one of my own) Thanks again Guys. Colin

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH. i have a 1.1 and do a daily commute to York from Leeds and it holds its own on the A64.
the torque comes in at around 3500rpm which is when it starts 'pulling' but it will sit at 60 all day long, you just have to read the road to keep a steady speed

i think another way of putting it is that it responds well when driven hard - lalli??

          Re: Which engine

I find the 1.3 to be more than adequate, i previously had a 1.1.......but its a 1.1 its not going to be a rocket however performed very well for the engine size

that is true. the 1.1 loves to rev but you can drive it 'normally' and it will keep up with traffic. put it this way it, the 1.1 engine in the forfour has only 3 BHP less as an 05 1.4 fiesta and the forfour is a lighter car than the fiesta

                Re: Which engine

Thanks yet again. I will try to test a 1.1, 1.5 and a diesel before deciding. I do remember my 1.3 being great fun when you thrashed it but I had just 'downsized' from a C class kompressor auto mercedes (which I lost more than twice the cost of the smart in 18 months in depreciation) so it was always going to be a let down especially in the ride and gearchange dept. Being the first imported it had the horrid sport suspension and 16" wheels which we know has a adverse affect on the ride and dosn't seem to make a vast difference to the handling. I will be patient this time and wait for the right car to come along. Cheers Colin
