Re: parking the smart way - legal?

I like that solution!!....Drive on the pavement!!

The red reflector comments....ie so you have to park 'nose in' are only valid after dark I think.......

But yes...all bikes park at 90 deg, back into kerb...so they can ride out (and if there is a camber on the road, you can't park a bike forward on a side stand because it may roll off it!!)......but their tax disc is usually mounted on the side, so can be seen from kerb, and they don't normally have to pay for parking!

Re: parking the smart way - legal?

Driving home this evening passing "Kingsholm" Rugby ground in Gloucester, we spotted a Jack Black 4/2 parked nose in to kerb between two other cars. Ive probably been past others parked the same way before, but never noticed.

As has been posted previously, I wonder what the legalities are....Think tomorrow I will have a word with Old Bill and see where we stand. When I get a definitive answer, I will post the result. :van:

Ps....Ive just written to Gloucester City Council asking whether or not we "For Two" owners can park at right angles without fear of getting clobbered. Then we should all know exactly where we stand.

So on the tax disc to kerb, and showing of reflector issues - those dicks who selfishly inconvenience everyone else by parking on the 'wrong' side of the road are breaking the law twice over. Never seen one of them prosecuted though.

You know, when i took my driving lessons / test etc, i was never informed or taught any sort of "parking laws" therefore i have for the last 10 years been apparently quite lucky, as i park where i can, pointing either way, assuming its not on a line and not plainly stupid or in the way (or obviously illegal). I think most reasonable traffic wardens will turn a blind eye unless its obviously in the way or actually dangerous, unless they are a complete jobsworth.
Ive never heard of this tax disk to kurb thing, are traffic wardens not allowed to step off the kurb on health and safety grounds? i expect its one of those "technically its a legality but nobody has ever noticed" things.

I was once told off by a policeman for pointing the wrong way in a one way street, but it was right on the end of the street so he let me off, i said by the time i'd gone round and come up the street the right way i'd have lost the space...

I have just been on the phone to derby city council, she had no idea of course, but she's going to call the enforcement company and see what they make of it, and call me back! she sounded genuinely interested in finding out herself :-D

          Watch this space!

or just go round in pairs and share the cost of 1 space!!

your car will not be visible from the side in the dark if all the cars around you leave and your car is on its lonesome sticking out from the curb sid eon to oncoming traffic.....

It's not the parking that's dangerous but the un-parking!
You stick at least half the width of your car into the oncoming traffic completely oblivious to any thing coming - think BIKE - then that line of traffic has no option but stop and wait until the other side is clear for you.

So, you endanger others, you need both lines of traffic to be clear or stop, instead of just one, and when done in the dark your dipped beam is in the eyes of those forced to stop for you. Selfish AND dangerous.

But now that I am aware that it is within the traffic wardens powers to put an end to it, I wouldn't call them jobsworths. I'd call them heroes.

You could of course correct you behaviour yourself, but why bother when you can wait for a 'telling off' then moan like fvck that the UK is a 'nanny state'?

(pic above) already been through that in the thread problemchild!

as for sticking out on its own in the dark, agreed it would look a bit odd, but people should be watching where they are driving! If you cant see an entire car with very shiney alloys in front of you, you probably shouldnt be driving..!

Pic demonstrates exactly what I mean. Just look at what the Citroen has to do to un-park. Christ, the entire town would be reduced to a standstill.

I will agree with you on this, specifically on a busy high-street. In the area that I am this isnt such an issue, as on the road my shop is on, its all parked down one side, making it a single lane, therefore people park in either direction and it makes no difference.

saying that, pulling out from a "correctly parked position" in the LHD smart its actually quite hard to see whats going on...

actually there was en entry-way behind the citroen, so he could jusr reverse up a couple of meters.
I was only there for 10 mins anyway, moved to the car park.

Re: parking the smart way - legal?

I just love the way we're all polite about it - you should really do this, you shouldn't really do that etc etc - when the average motorist these days doesn't give a t**s and does what they want :censor: (with or without a reprimand).

The amount of poor driving I see on a daily basis is unbelievable, with the most up & coming one being going through red lights reagardless & giving ppl who's turn it is to go a right load of grief as if they are in the right! I'm not a perfect driver by any means but it's getting down right dangerous...

By comparison I think this is only mild and probably wouldn't be a problem?

(sorry for hijacking the thead - just wanting to rant :p)

Not illegal to park contraflow, but it is a legal requirement to leave your sidelights on. It does annoy me when when people have pulled up on the opposite side with their dipped beam on.

                          Anywho, this is my effort.

Shop looks nice, but that parking is very selfish

Do you own the street or something :wag:

(and thats coming from a fellow smart car owner, gawd knows what other drivers are saying!)

Why can't you just park it normally?

When it's me waiting to turn right, I start moving as though I'm going to make the turn. You should see their faces.... Their underwear would be none too pretty either judging by the facials.. Faeces and facials. Serves the b@stards right.

..and the wipers aren't parked vertically

In that case it was a drop and run, was by far the easiest choice.

Anyway- just had a call back from the council, who just had a call from their enforcement company. She said basically it its a marked bay, you can do what the hell you like so long as your in the bay, and not inconveniencing anyone. if its road side, then the arent going to give you a ticket unless again its dangerous or in the way, as per any other parking angle.
HOWEVER the lights / reflectors etc are a police matter, but they said it was extremely unlikely that any action would ever be taken, again assuming your not parked dangerously or in the way.

                                Thats derbyshire anyway. :-)

wipers - yah i know, wasnt on purpose again, just pulled in, unloaded (took a pic, obviously!) and re-parked.
