Smart Thermostat is wrong in design, otherwise causing problems? Either cooling circuit is not compatible with the thermostat ... whatever is needed to be optimized.

A year ago I received an aftermarket thermostat bought on ebay. Price just below £20 with free delivery.

Its internal check valve was fitted wrong way around meaning engine will constantly leak warm coolant to radiator and therefore take forever to get up to operating temperature.

Water runs out as quickly as it runs in. No good for a warm and cosy cabin on cold wintry mornings.

Another thermostat to avoid is the Gates TH40390G1 for the diesel 450/451. The gates is just as bad as this one.

Above bad thermostat is for petrol Smarts model 450 and Roadsters.

The thermostat has no markings, no number and no name. Can be distinguished from the original Wahler by the clip that holds temperature sensor in position. Clip on this one looks far eastern in origin, is made from thin 0.7 mm diameter round zinc plated wire and does not clip on securely. Clip on the Wahler is made from heavy duty square zinc plated wire.

I later found the bad thermostat above is identical to those sold by both Eurocarparts and Carparts4less as Circoli 209910030.

        I suspect Febi's is same.

Conclusion:. Never buy any after market thermostat for your Smart.

Considering how difficult access is, I'd only consider OE

Picture of the bad fake thermostat sold by Eurocarparts, Misterauto, Carparts4less and many other factors. Confirmed made in China.

I explained the problem with the thermostat to Eurocarparts but I see they still sell it. Those people are not Smart.

To be honest - most people are cheapskates!

The thermostats are sold for earning money, since they are more sales a counter opinion does not matter; however, each time it sells what's the problem?
Because aftermarket thermostats are weak and hard replaced , deserve replaced system.

Due to cooling problems, we removed the wax element.
Now the cooling is good (even too good) but a new thermostat system is coming.
It will have two wax elements: one at 90C (original) and the second 95C (06H121113B).
                    .................................................. ...................
I inspected the proper functioning of the current thermostat.
We found that the return spring is deformed.
Investigating the cause of deformation, I watched everything.
                    What I found:
                    - wax housing support element is flexible
                    - the stainles steel upper washer deformed
                    - the viton bolt closes eccentrically
Perhaps the element of wax was deficient, opened only slightly .

                    • It could be worse ..... EmilysMum's Citroen C3 has an ECU controlled motorised valve instead of a conventional waxstat. £265 please ..... fitted of course haha

                      • Citroen is Citroen and Smart is something other than Citroen. And then it does not fit because C3 is set to work with G12 + and Smart with G11 ... haha. I bought OM660 fully equipped and functional with 200 euros.
Money can be solved quickly but where is the fun?
With the solenoid valve, the system is also made to some audible model, but the system is desirable because we have heard cases of burned engines due to the malfunctioning of that component. A motorized valve is more sensitive ...
A device the more complicated the more it can be damaged more often - in this case fry the engine.

                        • Today we went 25 miles to 30C and the coolant temperature did not exceed 3 bullets. Route through hills, level difference + 250m.
The conclusion is that without a thermostat the cooling system works at the parameters.
The thermostat with the crown spring and the flexible guide when in the open position partially obstructs the entrance.
The deflected thermostat arc and the flexible guide determine that the wax element partially obstructs the entry or creates a countercurrent in the opened position.
Whatever the phenomenon, flow is diminished and poor cooling. The Gates thermostat is very good - only for seller ,for user's memorable (naspa' or worse - how do you spell it?)
This is my opinion on the issue.
I would like to know other opinions.

                            N'est pas is correct spelling.

Photos show the bad Gates thermostat opened out. The dogs that form the threads are far too week to take pressure of cooling system. Result is the chapeau pops off loosing most coolant.

Disc does not seal against the deformed seat. Its check valve leaks. Spring is not straight.

Gates should stick to what they do which is best making rubber belts.

                            • The spring to be shown is a bit deviated. The guide (support point) of the wax element is not flexible at your Gates?
Pictures with my spring could only post on another site http://clubsmartcar.com/index.php?/t...ystem/&page=28 #685
