    Re: 78.5 MPG Smart CDI

I'm only getting low 60's at the moment - c. 425 to 450 miles per tank of motorway driving on cruise at the national limit. I ought to see if I could improve things by driving a tankful on the throttle, but I find the cruise very relaxing on a 200+ mile journey without a stop.

Only another 8 months before the DPF can take a hike now...

Some would probably tell me I drive too gently (!), but I try to balance being efficient with not holding up traffic. Some points about the way I drive:

      - On a dual carriageway I won't go above 60mph, and if I'm not in a hurry, will stick to 50-55mph.
      - If going up a hill, I tend not to use cruise control, but slowly slow down (if the traffic flow permits), and then speed up again along the flat / at the next downhill bit, rather than sticking to the speed I was doing when I started up the hill.
      - I accelerate as gently as possible for the traffic conditions. If there's no-one behind me, there's nothing to gain by flooring it from a set of lights for example.
      - I coast from higher speed limits into lower speed limit areas as soon as I see the speed limit signs change.
      - I also coast as much as is practicable when running up to a junction / queue of traffic. The further you can roll without the engine having to do any work the better. For one thing my real-time mpg then shoots up to 9999 which can only do good things to the average!
      - I don't rev above 2500rpm, and get into the highest gear possible, as soon as possible for the given driving conditions.

Braking, accelerating hard and driving at speed all have detrimental affects. When cruising at 30mph or 40mph along the flat, I get an indicated mpg of well over 100, and that figure will only decrease the faster you drive - 40 seems to be the most efficient speed from what I've seen, but obviously isn't suitable for a motorway

There are loads of similar tips here which you might find useful:

      Cheers!

PS. Mine's also a 54bhp, and I use premium grade diesel wherever I fill up (BP Ultimate, Shell V-Power etc). It's an unfair comparison, but the first fill-up I did after using normal fuel was about 10mpg lower than after using premium grade, but that was only one tanks worth, so you can't really base much on that ... thought I'd mention it though!

I'm getting around 450 per tank as well, but that's leaving 5 or 6 litres in the tank, so I'm only putting about 27 litres back in on average.

            Cheers

Do bear in mind that one person's idea of a full tank could be very different to yours, and the fuel gauges aren't particularly accurate. Some people fill up as soon as it starts asking for it, some leave it to 0.0l, you've got a variation of over a gallon there!

Having now owned the cdi for 18mths, I wouldn't recommend it - it has character but think the little normally asperated petrol version would have been more practical. Wish I'd bought a nearly new Brabus though - if you're getting **** fuel economy you might as well do it in style. Still love the package with the Smarts though - comfy seats, teacup styling, flappy paddles and original design.
