  • Smart Fourtwo fuel tank capacity ?

I have been trying to find out the 451 fuel tank capacity ? Smart UK don't list the information but several other sites state 33 liters ?
If 33L is correct, is that the tank capacity or can you fit more if you brim it from nearly empty ?

I'm asking because I keep bottling it after my 2013 CDi clocks up 500 miles when the last segment of the fuel gauge starts to flash

I filled tonight at 501 miles and it took 27.02L, meaning there could be another 6L i.e another 100+ miles before empty

NB : After the first week and a half fuel consumption is improving, 1st tank 81.68mpg, 2nd tank 82.24mpg and today's third tank was 84.29mpg, would have been better except for the central London traffic :

Its 33 ltrs or 7.25 gallons max.

Its not worth trying to fill it up the neck of the fuel pipe of any car, as it will most likely explode back on you, if the cutoff on the fuel nozzle does not work right, covering your trousers in fuel. Been there, done that, and its messy

As for the last flashing segment, that tells you to head for a filling station before you (as you say) bottle it.

It depends on the car with the flashing fuel warning lights, some will go for miles and miles even when showing empty and others will die fairly quickly. I've pushed my forfour a few times when i couldnt be bothered to fuel up and havn't ran out yet

Have you ever carried two glass milk bottles full of petrol a couple of miles from the petrol station back to your 'empty of fuel' car, I have, and I can tell you, it stings like mad on your hands, and it stinks

You would not like that experience.

And what car was that you say......It was a Renault5 with a dodgy fuel gauge (that read a quarter full when really it was on empty)

Well I carry a full fuel can but I assume like most modern diesels the Smart doesn't have a fuel pump, therefore if you actually run out, the only way to get the fuel to the engine is use a vacuum pump, therefore it would have to be recovered to a garage

Thank you, so that means that I still have about 6 litres left

My brothers newish focus was like that, changed the fuel filter and couldnt start the bloody thing. Didnt realise till the job was done there wasnt a manual pump.

Guess its another way of trying to force you to go to a garage and get a simple job done?

Re: Smart Fourtwo fuel tank capacity ?

Well after another 463.7 miles this week it was time to fill up again !
This tank full was an experiment in faster driving and keeping up with the London traffic
So that meant 70mph all the time on the unrestricted motorway sections, still 50mph on the restricted M25 section, 70mph on the M11 into London, until the traffic starts to queue.
Then just keeping up with traffic in the outside lanes into central London and more aggressive take offs

So my last tank averaged 84.29mpg and today's result was..................

                78.80mpg

So if I take it easy traffic permitting it takes an extra 5 minutes and I gain another 6mpg ????????
This would be very easy to ignore, but considering the 35k+ miles I'm going to drive this year, it would significantly increase drive train and brake wear and tear
Although for me the general level of aggression required, trying to keep up with the pack isn't worth the raised blood pressure and swearing

Re: Smart Fourtwo fuel tank capacity ?

Well I managed to hold out today, 505.1 miles before I filled up when I got home.
Stuffed 26.72 litres of Asda's finest diesel in at 132.7 per litre, will never fill up in London the cheapest I've seen is 135.9 !
So that equates to 86.09mpg, got say I'm a little disappointed, because I have learnt to flat line most roundabouts and have been doing some manual gear changes where it helps.
I must be losing at least 6 or 7mpg in the London traffic and 3 or 4 mpg through my lack of patience, which would in result in 95mpg

So is my 100mpg target achievable Probably not until the motor gets a good few more miles on it and the traffic Gods clear my London route and motorways on the way home

But at least we now have good bench mark figures to compare with the engine remap I'm considering

                    You're disappointed?

For a brand new car that's amazing! Expect higher MPG after the first service.
My car has around 13000 Miles and I have never done better than 71MPG. It can do better, but I do more city miles than motorway and the traffic ruins everything.

Beware with the remap, it might void your warranty.

Re: Smart Fourtwo fuel tank capacity ?

Been a bad week, got up late one morning, Wed night the M11 and M25 was stuffed so sat in traffic for nearly 3 and half hours, then tonight I booted it all the way get home

So after dropping another tank full of Asda's finest Diesel in the results were 76.94mpg.........................

Just like being at school ???????

                      Could do better

Jeeze after a couple of 85/87mpg tank fulls, a three and half hour traffic jam when the M25 was shut on Thursday, followed by two days of driving like I stole it resulted in 26.90 litres of Asda's diesel being dropped in tonight but recorded my worse mpg figure yet at 75.20mpg

and.............Asda diesel has jumped up a penny a litre to 133.7p

                          Oooof,. 75.2mpg is your worst?!!
We travelled approx. 350 miles yesterday @ 28mpg... that's £80 thank you very much!
(Was a diesel, but not a smart)

In retrospect, I suppose "supercalafragalisticexpialadocious" wasn't a great "safe word..."

Regarding your issue with not being able to fit any more fuel in the car when its complaining that its only got 5litres left and then finding that it will only take 9-8 litres less than the 33litres is like my petrol 450. I get 160 miles out of 12 litres on a 22litre tank and it wont take anymore than 12litres. It seems the level sensor is either faulty or they arent calibrated very well or indeed dont sense very well after a while. I tells fibs to me because it comes up saying theres only 5 litres left and it drops down to 3.5 litres. I switch off the car and come back a little later and then Ive still got 5 litres left lol When I actually bother to fill it up it will only take 13-14 litres so theres still supposedly another 8litres left in it! Frustrating or what! Like the 22litre tank isnt small enough! lol

Try some different fuels - my cdi likes Shell (regular diesel) or Sainsburys.
