  • Engine Warning Light Loss of power

Hi, just got the engine warning light on on my 2010 CDi. The power has been poor recently not beeing able to go over 60mph, so unplugged battery hoping it would reset Managemt unit. It worked initially and today the power has dropped again but this time the engine light has come on. I had the CDi fix done just awhile back bu Mercedes York having suffered from the initial problem with loss of power and it has been fine since.

Any suggestion what it could be...sensor? ...and any good Smart diagnostic garages near to York?.

    Cheers Plod1

    Hope it isn't a blocked DPF ???
Has it had much of a run recently ??

Yes got a good run on motorway over Xmas, after about 70 miles, thats when the power seemed to reduce. On the return journey it was ok at first and then again after similar distance the power reduced. Was able to travel at 60mph.No warning lights. At home unhooked battery and fault appeared to resolve until today when the engine warning light came on and power reduced once more.

it could be a blocked DPF. take it to mercedes and have the codes read and see what codes are logged

Anyone any idea how much it will cost to get a Merc/Smart dealer to check the fault codes?

it should be a one off diagnostic charge. Mercedes of Leeds charged me about £60

Buy a good code reader and read codes yourself. One of Autel's readers do all systems on Smart cars. Costs about £170.

It is Autel MD702 or MD802. The latter does nearly all makes.

I have a CDI 2010 the Same as yours as it turned out to be the upstream and downstream temperature sensors that were faulty. I have Mercedes Diagnostics and am in Halifax if you want to pop over I can run the diagnostics for free if you like.

How many miles has yours travelled?

Yorkshire Devils thanks for the offer but Ive just had it checked for free at the garage that does my MOTs He has an Autel DS708pro which identified codes P2359 and P2797. We cleared the codes and Ive been running it for a week without issue. In fact it seemed to run better than I can remember. Then yesterday not long after starting the car it went into limp mode but with no engine light. I turned ignition off waited a bit then back on and its ran fine since. I took it for a scan again today and again the code P2359 came up and the other one but not sure if I cleared the other one or not last time.

My car has done 35,000miles. So itsounds very much like the upstream or downstream sensors are knackered or faulty.

Do you know if the sensors are the same or two different parts and what ae the bext replacements, as I beleive Merc hav had a few variations trying to improve them. Also any ideas apart from Merc where i may source some?

                    Cheers

                      HI Plod,

The upstream sensor and down stream sensor are SA0009051732 & SA0009051532 prices are £68+vat & £79.50+vat (prices 2014 List) Make sure before you remove any of the sensor you use lots of plus gas or similar.

If you decide to let merc do they job complain and you should receive a minimum of 50% discount after telling them you have reported the issue to Vosa as a serious vehicle defect and asking why the part has been changed several times.

Once the rear bumper is off the car you should be able to change the two sensors within minutes. When you have reported the issue to Vosa (as a serious vehicle defect) call Mercedes customer services on 020 7975 7079 or 020 7660 9993 and register it when them and tell them how dangerous this when it enters safe mode at Speed etc and your disappointment of this well documented problem,

Oh great cheers thanks for that. I did complete a VOSA defect form last time and they did the full engine drop and move some pipes etc. Its been fine since then (2 years ago) but I notice that they didnt change the sensors at the time.

Also does anyone know the values for each sensor when running a live diagnostic scan. The one I have access to, I briefly played with it the other day and observed the following figures whilst the Smart was idling. Upstream 106 Downstream 274. These did fluctuate slightly. I am presuming these are temperatures, but I could be wrong!

Spoke to Smart Customer service, who were aware of my cars fix history but as it is out of warranty they would not agree to replace or offer contribution direct to myself for the sensors. I have to take the car to Merc have an £80.00 diagnostic done, then they need to apply to Smart UK for a goodwill contribution, which may not be successful. Which would leave me an extra £80.00 out of pocket, the price of a sensor. Typical.

Think the best course is to wait til it develops fault again and replace them myself, total cost £180.00. Not such an economical car after all.

I love the car great fun to drive , but by god what a bag of shite. Mind you the first 700cc petrol 450 in scratch black that I had was making some weird noises when I part exchanged it, and would by now have had its engine rebuilt, so that too was a bag of shite, and no I will not be getting the new 453 as it looks like a bag of shite.

Thanks for your advice and help folks.

I think there is a plausibility test in star and if there is a big difference between the upstream and down stream temperature it points to a faulty sensor. It's best to replace the upstream and down stream together.

I had the occasional intermittent problem like yours and it happened once every few months, a simple on and off sorted the problem. Then 1 year later 300 miles from home no star (left it at home) had to use local Merc dealer to diagnose, supply & replace the two sensors and it cost £390!

My advice would be bit the bullet and replace the sensors but my diagnostic tester didn't always show the sensor as faulty full time. They were intermittently faulty.

Persist with customer services and that will give you something if you have the work done at the Merc retailer (who will warrantee the parts for 2 years)

I would make a point of asking why they are on version 3 or 4 for the upstream and down stream sensors!
