Bad news but at least now you know what is wrong. Provided the damaged lobe has its original shape, I assume there is no need to replace camshaft since tappet follower rolls on camshaft lobe.
Here are some guides that may be of some help. They are for the 54 HP engine but I think most will apply.
install high-pressure pump.pdf install camshaft sprocket.pdf install camshaft bearing caps.pdf install camshaft.pdf

Good she is back running. 10,000 miles oil change interval seems too much. I try doing mine as per the book which is every 12,500 km. Shorter when running on Lidl oils. Presently using ASDA fully synthetic meeting MB spec for low ash oil hence suitable for diesel engines with particulate filter which in my case is a bit of an over kill. Also use same oil for outboards, scooter and other 2 stroke engines. Cheap at only £20 for five litres.

How to check timing:
Check engine valve timing.pdf
Above procedure is rather involved as both cylinder head cover and vacuum pumps are coming off.
To check timing the easy way just do this:
Turn engine by hand until tab on cam shaft is on top and timing mark on crank shaft pulley matches up with mark on timing chain cover, i.e. you give engine an extra turn compared to Smart's procedure.
Tab on cam shaft pulley should be parallell with top face of cylinder head if timing is right. There is a flat protrusion inside cylinder head cover just opposite tab on cam shaft pulley. Easier to check if these two are parallell.
This modified procedure only takes a few minutes.Attached FilesLast edited by tolsen; 04-10-16, 08:49 AM.
