so to test the fan behind the radiator, i should remove the temp sensor while the engine is running? and then this would create a fault forcing the fan on?

Also how would I know if my pump is broken?

And do I need to remove the cap from the expansion bottle whilst removing the sensor?

Don't remove sensor only unplug. Pump is OK if it does not leak, there is no bad noise from its bearing and no excessive play in bearing.

          Re: Over heating problem

Ok, So I have bled the system, through the point at the front and by removing the sensor behind the engine, I have topped up the coolant to the right level and then let the engine run.

It has taken a lot longer to heat up this time, but after a short while, it was between 80-90c

after revving the engine for a while and leaving the engine running, it eventually reached 100c

i checked and the fan was working completely fine...

I noticed a lot of smoke coming from the engine, but then the temperature suddenly started declining back to between 80-90

          is this normal?

            Re: Over heating problem

I haven't driven the car yet, but usually it heats up a lot quicker.

Also checked the two hoses behind the sensor the small one and the larger one, both of them heat up so I take it the thermostat doesn't need replacing?

I have also checked the hoses leading connecting to the radiator they both were warm so im guessing the flow between the radiator isnt blocked?

              Re: Over heating problem

These thermostats do normally become lazy and remain in part open position resulting in the engines taking a long time to come up to operating temperature in cold weather conditions. I've never come across a Smart thermostat fail closed. The large hose becoming hot signifies that thermostat opens and that coolant is circulating.
Your cooling system may be OK now. Take the car for a short spin and find out.

What would you say is the normal operating temperature?

87 - 97C I think. Engine may get hotter in excess of 100 when pulling up long hills at max speed.

                    Re: Over heating problem

good i'm hoping the situation is resolved now,

i took it for a short spin, the battery light came on, when i came to a stop i turned the engine off and tried to turn it back on, but it wouldn't start, does this mean the battery is not charging when its being driven?

i find it very strange because the light hasn't ever come on before.

Maybe auxiliary drive belt has parted. Perhaps you've disturbed some wiring?

Hmm...I cant see anything out of the ordinary!

Any suggestions on how to test or check anything that may be connected to this problem?
