and another scenario. you stop to check your oil. you find its low and the top up you carry is either empty or not enough to bring the level to max. you go to the motor factors and they have the correct oil but it doesn't meet the specifications. what do you do? drive it with low oil, or buy the oil and top it up and drive on?

I make sure there is sufficient oil in it for the journey prior to embarking on the journey.

i never said i was better qualified than yourself. i was just saying that not every garage uses the correct spec oil for any given car. at the last place i worked i got told to use the oil we used in jaguars in VW that require long life oil.

And that is just the type of ignorant behaviour that needs to change. And you working in the trade are one who can change behaviours. Hence me wanting to inform on oil and not propogate myth.

I agree with lalli_d1 on this one. Any oil is better than none. In May last year I ran out of 2 stroke oil on remote Loch Etive. After beach coming for 15 minutes, I had enough oil to open a shop. Not exactly the right grade but I did make it home.

A friend of mine has an annoying rear end incontinence problem requiring up to seven stops between Banchory and Fort Bill. At my suggestion he bought a Lidl portapotti which he kept in his Corsa. On a trip to England some time later he thought he could keep on driving further between stops. Nature called eventually and he just pulled into a lay-by on the A74. Only after having dropped his trousers and sitting on his portapotti did he realise there was no privacy.
