  • auto gearbox conversion

Hi there -- I'm not yet a Smart owner, but looking for a fourtwo. Problem is my wife needs fully automatic which reduces choice. I read on a review site that a guy had his semi-automatic converted to include the fully-automatic function by re-programming the computer and changing the gear lever. Anyone come across this, and if so, how much it would cost?

full auto is a simple electronic upgrade with new gear stick from smart on G2 models, not sure about earlier ones or the cost.

It can be done by putting in a switch and connecting it to the correct parts of the PCB but the easiest way is to buy the gearlever unit from smart and get them to program it to work...TAN number needed

Maybe your confused with the two different transmissions available, ready to buy, no need to do any conversions.

                SEMI-AUTO ONLY
If you buy the base model, a Fortwo PURE, it comes only with semi-automatic, which means no clutch pedal, and push forward once to go up a gear pull back to go down a gear, ie, manual operation of stick. 6 forward gears in all.

                FULL AUTO & SEMI-AUTO
This is the one you want.....
The next two models up, the Fortwo PULSE and the PASSION come either optional or standard with the full auto function, ie, by pressing a button on the side of the stick, this again has no clutch pedal, but the gears are automated, so no need to touch the stick.

Also this setup can be reverted back to semi-auto, by the touch of that switch on the stick. Again 6 forward gears in all.

                      Re: auto gearbox conversion

Hi there – since my opening post on this subject I have bought a ’52 Pulse – without the fully auto gearbox.

The missus is trying the semi, but would be happier with fully auto – so I contacted the two Smart dealerships in the North East with a view to following Blackdog’s advice [thanks for that].

One dealer told me it can’t be done and the other has not got back to me [from weeks ago].

Has anybody had the conversion done somewhere north of Watford?

Since its a 2002, It will be a late Mk5 or a Mk6 meaning it won't use Tan numbers yet.

You will need a new SE Drive, Around £15 on Ebay.

And a gear knob with the side button, Max £10 on Ebay.

That may just be enough to do it as hardware only.

justrules – judging by your car you know quite a bit about these things. I can work out what a gear knob is [!], but an SE Drive? Any chance of a simpleton’s explanation? Could I fit one or is it a garage job? I’ve scanned the other Smart sites and [ebay] and can find no mention. Appreciate help.
