        Thanks for the response Robert.

I think I was bidding on the one you got but it wasn't me that got it up to that price!

I'll post my progress on here but my Sedrive hasn't arrived yet but it comes with a gear knob! If it does indeed arrive with the gear knob I will have a leather switched gear knob which I could sell for what I paid, £8 + postage.

Steev -- I'll have your spare gear knob, price seems fair. Yes I got the sedrive from ebay -- and paid more than I wanted to. However, still less than Smart and I begrudge giving them any money anyway.

                  Re: auto gearbox conversion

As they say in the news, this story has legs …

I have now fitted the fully-auto SE Drive and gear knob with auto button.

The job turned out to be straight forward, though justrules is right, the security torx bits are essential – the packet they came in refers to mine as ‘TS tamperproof star bit set’, the one you need is TS30. They are a kind of hollow torx bit. One other tip, after spending ten minutes trying to coax the key barrel from the original SE Drive I realised that you need to put the key into it to release it. Doh!

                  Anyhow, the problem is – fully-auto doesn’t work !

Anyone any suggestions? -- justrules and evolution, your help has been enormous, any ideas? Have I missed something simple? I remember a few posts that say when some jobs had been done on the car you had to un-hook the battery to re-set the computer, could it be something that basic?

Of course it could be a faulty SE Drive – but it came in a Smart bag and shows no sign of ever being fitted. I’m assuming it is the fully auto version as it has the wires running up the gear lever. The knob is pretty basic to have anything go wrong.

I’m really trying to avoid ringing our local dealers, I’m sure I know more about it than they do

BTW it works fine in semi-auto, so the car isn’t off the road.

Any help greatfully received - and if I ever get it to work I promise to update this thread so that others might benefit from my trials and tribulations

have you tried it without the gearknob (incase its the knob causeing the problem??)

roadstersam -- you mean just put a screwdriver [or something] across the terminals?

                          Re: auto gearbox conversion

Took the knob off (ooo errr missus) -- the connection is a simple sprung connector, put a screwdriver across the terminals -- nothing

sorry matey, poor description -- I pushed the connection [as the button does], and when that didn't work tried by-passing it with the screwdriver across the terminals.
