Re: auto gearbox conversion
A new posting in the forum has reminded me that I didn’t finish this tale.
I eventually found a Smart dealer (Stockton) who knew what I was talking about – or at least they had a technician who I spoke to on the phone and he knew what was required. He was also happy to accept that I had done the 'donkey work' in fitting the new SE - I had thought they might reject the job because they had were not doing the whole thing.
The upshot is that the car had to go in to be re-programmed, which involved getting the TAN number from Germany – apparently this can only be done whilst the car is in the workshop. Cost was 180 of my English pounds, and around three hours in the waiting area [very plush, it is a Merc dealers after all].
Since that time – April – the car has always been driven in fully auto [its not so bad when you get used to it] and nothing has gone wrong.
