TomToms are nice hardware, but their software & customer service SUCK! I've had a few TomToms over the years, currently on the 930T which is nice, but the latest update causes stammering speech, sticking display etc, they don't seem to test their new firmware before releasing it to the masses! TomTom Home is also the biggest pile of balls possible, if you do go for a TomTom take a full backup of it immediately (using Windows explorer, NOT TomTom Home which doesn't actually back the device up properly) - having a backup is essential because the updates sometimes render the device unusable, waiting for TomTom's sh1tty customer service is a waste of time, so having the option of rolling back to a previous version is essential. (You just copy & paste the backup into the device through Explorer, again do not use Home for this)
When I next upgrade I'm probably going to the Garmin Nuvi range, years of TomTom's ineptitude has made me give up on the brand.

Can anyone advise me on a good Satnav? Can spend up to 200 squideroonies
I'm going abroad for the first time ever in the car, only going across the water to france and to have pootle and explore, anyone used a satnav in france before?
Oh I forgot to mention, only ever used the old road atlas, so I've never used a satnav before
        Any Advice?

        Thanks in advance.

I ended up with a Garmin Nuvi,

Very easy to use, although my model wont work abroad.

Price wise, i believe it was over £130-00.

          Good Luck Buddy

I've been looking at the Garmin Nuvi's
I prefer the 4.3 screens, so don't have to squint as much to see screen whilst driving

my other half has a Tomtom and it's craperoo - it ALWAYS freezes on roundabouts so it's a total guess which exit to take, and it's almost always the wrong one... I've heard garmin has better tracking... I'm going to order the new iphone next week and replace mine with that and the new tomtom software for iphone, which i'm hoping might be better.. who knows though right!

                        Re: Which Sat Nav ????

At ebuyer.com, there are two systems I would recommend. The Navigo V2 system costing £49.99 or the Navigo V2 system with FM transmitter and bluetooth costing £59.99.

V2 runs Turbodog 5, whereas V3 runs Turbodog 6. These are adequate, but limited.

However, the Navigo systems run Win CE 5.0 and can be loaded with other software, and if you sign-up for forum access at www.thepctailor.com you can download the latest maps for many sifferent satnav systems.

My personal favouriste is iGo 8 which imho is leagues above the basic TomTom systems. The maps depict 3D buildings (ok, that's a gimmick), and is far more accurate than TomTom. The voice tells me not only to turn, but tells me the name of the road I need to turn into. It tells me what lane to drive in, informs me "well over the speed limit" which is better than an alarm sound, and even tells me where the nearest smart dealership/service centre is!

It's faster at calculating the route, allows me to turn to cycle or pedestrian settings and still places me accurately on the off-road maps.

It even works indoors, and picks up satellites in a couple of seconds, whereas TomTom works only outside (still getting my position wrong and sending me up my road instead of down) and takes minutes to detect the satellites.

TomTom is slightly more intuitive, but I'd rather have accuracy.

And For £50 or £60, well, I'm very happy.

I'm going to say garmin too - had to buy a new one to replace my old streetpilot as it was cheaper than buying a European map. £99 for the nuvi205T

Clear instructions - sent me to Bremerhaven and back with a couple of planned detours with no problems. Will be using it in France again in July - it lets me know my speed too and does European wide speed cameras!

I've seen good sat nav deals on 'Handtec'

TomTom are good.......but for quality and customer support Garmin are clearly the market leaders.
