  • Temperature Sender Coolant leak - help!?

I've just changed the coolant in the Smart, and carried out a bleed of the system by removing the temperature sender. Now I have a problem, the sender isn't gripped firmly enough in the housing when the clip is replaced and is allowing coolant to escape past it. If I push down on it the leak stops, but that's obviously not a practical solution!

Any suggestions for a fix will be appreciated!

      ah-ha!!

There is meant to be an O ring there....

I didn't see anything about that on the FQ site, obviously not looking hard enough. I've done a temporary fix for now.

I guess I might have dropped it, but I cannot remember seeing it at.

Do you happen to know if this is a smart spare part/part of the temperature sender/easily replaced with a rubber ring from halfords/factors?

If I could thank-you on this site I would! Cheers.

A suitably sized O-ring (smart or otherwise :p) will do the job.

Sorry Prasius, the O-ring comes on the 'new' sender if you replace it, and never really comes off even when bleeding - it might be worth us adding in a note to remember to ensure the o-ring is in place

In retrospect, I suppose "supercalafragalisticexpialadocious" wasn't a great "safe word..."

I think it would be a useful reminder/note.

I'll pop into Halford's tomorrow and find something suitable. I don't know why I didn't even think of that as a possible cause/solution myself but given the frustration and annoyance of that bloody metal clip I was probably not being very rational! On the bright side I get to take that bloody clip off again. Yay.

Tie a piece of string to the clip, then if you drop the clip taking it off, you can just pull on the string and retrive the clip!

When you buy the tempertaure sender you get a new "o" ring with it. When you buy a new thermostate you get a new sender with it.

A pair of long nosed pliers helps with taking off the cilp!

              Regards,

              John
