  • How long does a remap take to take effect?

Hi there guys, as you probably know I and a few other people have had remaps on our cars done over the weekend. Trouble is that they seem to be very slow in taking effect. I've been told that they can take upto a week to take effect.

Heres a list of things I can and can't do.

    I can:- <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
Chase small cars along short stretches of motorway.
Pull reasonably well from 4th and 5th gear
Go over 85mph - when facing down hill- with the wind behind me
    change gears quicker

    I can't- <img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>
    Chase BMW's
    Pull reasonably in 6th gear
Run as smoothly on the motorway as i did when i did'nt have the map.
Go over 80mph on the flat.
    Spin the wheels.

My car is a 45bhp pure with a cycle valve, and graham baker scoop, K&N filter and a Ragazzon Stealth FIA exhaust- so in theory should have around 55-60bhp. I know i'm not ever going to be as quick as remaped pulses or passions- but it just doesn't sem to have had any effect yet- perhaps i'm worrying to much, should i give it more time to run in? There are other people who have said that the map didn't seem to have made any difference to there car yet. Could anyone who has had a map of any flavour please tell me if this is normal. Also this is not the place to try to sell me an opposing remap... so don't! lol! Its not the software- i think it could be the car... or me!

Thanks in advance guys- and lets keep this on topic for once! lol!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

PS. If any of the moderators are listening - perhaps we could start a data base of testomonials of people with various flavours of remaps- and pros and cons of remaps in one locked uncomentable forum? Perhaps? Would make it so much easier for the potential buyer rather than having the "he who shouts loudest competition" as we seem to have now. Just a thought. Dave MUNK

Mine is a SRU remap and took effect straight away!

I dont understand why ther could be a delay.... surely its either modded or not.... no running in or time to happen.

    Prove me wrong!

Well what happende with a Tuning concept map is that the ECU was flasher- e.g it was formated losing all of its memory of how it has been run in the 17thousand miles before hand. eg. its a new car to all intensive purposes, in the same way that if a champion sprinter loses all his memory of running he has to learn how to walk again before he can run- or that is my understanding... the people who i have spoken to who haven't hand SRU maps have said that they take time, but it seems that everyone i have spoken to with an SRU map has had the map applied immediately. Surely the must be a difference here? Perhaps the SRU ones issue just new instructions rather than flashing the ECU- please anyone! HEEEEEEEELLLLPPPP! Dave MUNK

Ok so if I rag my car now will the remap not take affect properly?
Who knows the answer to that one?
Tried to keep it under 3500rpm but I just don't think that'll ever happen with me behind the wheel <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

sru remap on my roadie - different car straight away - no waiting and no chugging under 3500 rpm. advice was to floor it all the time, and it damn near took off.

would be concerned if i didney notice the difference straight away.

Certainly when mine had the SRU remap it was evident immediately - Paul took it out to "check to see if it had been taken" by the ECU and pushed-it <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>. Advice I "may" have been given was to drive it like I'd nicked it <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I guess it's all down to how the software's been written and it's functionality.

It's my understanding the stage1 Digitec/NCT remap is also immediately noticeable and with the stage2 piping, additional software is flashed to the ECU for instant change. Although I believe it's been noted on the boards that with just the stage2 pipe the ECU will take time to adjust (hence the additional software).

I've heard disconnecting the battery knocks the Smartie back into learning mode, but retains remapped parameters? Is this correct? Sorry - don't know how long it takes to learn your driving style, but maybe this is why you're effectively "running it in" at under 3500rpm for a while?

            Whatever the remap, at whatever time it kicks-in, you're guaranteed to have more fun than before <img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hate to say it, but my old 55bhp Mk3 passion with a (sorely missed) Jonboy Digi-tec stage 2 remap, inlet pipe & zorst + K&N & michalak intake pushing around 84bhp.

              Did :
Chase BMW's (and ate one or two)
Still didn't pull very well in 6th
Run smoothly on (my own private) motorway @ 80-90
Hit 100+ (on the clock) uphill!
Span the wheels (in the wet with the plug in)

I can understand the car 'settling in' to the new map as the mechanicals, fueling and sensors adjust to suit the new software (or am I taking ****), but I'd say you should have noticed the hyke of 30bhp pretty quickly I know I did!

                digi-tec/jonboy

was there in a instance and the idea was to give it what for, for about 15 hours to learn the ecu the new mapping and other techie bits

now it is still running GREAT

mellowyellow used to have a 25k pure and with the cycle valve mod and a Jonboy remap it immediately became a monster.

SOMETIMES, remaps just don't take and need doing again ... Jonboy reckoned this happened to him a few times.

Never had a problem with any of my cars, all 3 went very nicely straight away and got better within a week.

                    I Can't
                    Chase BMW's
                    Pull reasonably in 6th gear
Run as smoothly on the motorway as i did when i did'nt have the map.
Go over 80mph on the flat.
                    Spin the wheels.
Dizzy is a MK6 Passion Cab with a 20+ stone porker at the helm, K&N and De-lip Evil Twin Dump Valve and:

                    I'd give any 316, 318, 320, 320d, 520d, 520i or 728i a run for its money
She Pulls like Pornstar in the buff in 6th to about 95 mph ( so i am told )
Goes over 85 up hill ( Again so i am told )
Runs as smoothly as smothly is
Get the "easy off fatty" light on easily in the wet ( i wont use a plug! )

I don't like the sound of your re-map Dave! are you absolutly sure it took! I know from SRU and Cambridge Smart Cars and MB Cambridge that they don't always take first time every time, the first one done at MB Camb was done thrice to take and to be honest if Dizzy didn't fly after parting with my cash i would have been after blood!

Once programmed i was told to "sod off and enjoy" I did.

But what should you expect from a 45 bhp Pure?

                      I've got a mkV pulse 2001 with 29,000 miles.
went to Edinburgh 4 weeks ago met with Mr C and got a remap along with Phil, JJ and Steve that was between 5-7pm, at 10pm we had a thrash down the city bypass, instant change to the car i drove to Edinburgh, excelent pick up in all gears went off the clock no problem.
Mr C said it will continue to improve over the next 15 hrs of running.
He wasn't joking i have seen an improvement in torque in all gears.
On the way home i was cruising off the clock from Edinburgh to Dundee Without any problems.

Hope you get your remaps sorted out

                      Keith

hmmm its picking up now- not much - but its picking up
si has offerd to come down and reinstall it anyway if all goes wrong. The Auto-mode is spankingly good- NB the gearshift times are only ever reduced in automode. dave MUNK

well at this present time i am wishing that i had not had it done , the dumpvalve makes more noise and it has a s when in auto mode and it cruises at 80 easier but does not want to go any quicker which is a shame as it would do a lot more standard!

give it a week - if i'm unhappy with mine - which if it carries on at this rate i might be- i will be knocking on simons door. For you info though i've just clocked a 14.6second 0-60 as compared to 18.2seconds yesterday- and 83mph through my benchmark road, whereas only two hours beforehand i'd only been able to do it at 80... t seems to be learning... give it a week, i think you will be suprised with the results! dave

i hav just been out for another blast this time to try out the top end power and the results so far are it has more torque low in the rev range in 4th to 6th gears but the is nothing much at the top end as it struggled to rev past 4500 and reaches 5600 eventually!
