  • Covers for avoiding heat loss

The radiator must be isolated from airflow in cold weather.
At Smart, there is no possibility of intervention in the zone radiator, so be maneuvering from outside.
A electrical handling windows fits the car. Also a piece of tarpaulin used on trucks makes up the cover.
Curtainsider must travel on the guides and must be supported by metal tubes.
The guides I mounted on box radiator (in front of radiators) and profiles is U aluminum.

Covering up radiator does help. Temperature of coolant being returned from radiator will be higher hence more heat available in cabin.

Something I have planned for years is fitting an air flap in cold air inlet to inter cooler thereby reducing cooling efficiency of inter cooler. Flap in closed position would only be used in cold whether conditions or before engine is up to operating temperature. Anticipated end result is warmer inlet air and higher combustion temperature meaning quicker warm up time and more heat to cabin. You can easily test whether this solution works by stuffing sheep wool or something in inlet air duct to inter cooler.

I did look at trapping some thin plastic between the IC fan and the IC rad.

I made winter grill covers for my car last year. Might have to do a guide.

The idea isolation radiator is not new. The Soviets used it in cars for Siberia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO1VDARqfhY from min. 3:26

KrAZ-255. 14.9 litre diesel. 240 HP @ 2100 rpm. Considerably higher fuel consumption than our 450 Cdis.

In the 70s it was acceptable consumption so big truck. A comparison: Kraz14900 cmc- 50l / 100km diesel two stroke diesel vs GM19000cmc 45l / 100km four stroke but GM was in the mid 80s .
Focus is on shielding system used for the radiator.

Today I did the lower shaft.
Today made tarpaulin ... anything like https://picasaweb.google.com/1128270...33654685944162
The result is not great but for this application is suitable https://picasaweb.google.com/1128270...34057293667186

For some obscure reason I can't make your links work and see no photos.
Now trying posting one of my photos on Picasa.

You have to make them public by changing album visibility.
By the way, logs like these will keep you warm once they dry out.

Perhaps easier using the advanced editor, then paste straight into URL box in adding image pop up window.
