  • Steering angle sensor

This wretched thing is still giving me grief!

I've repaired the ribbon cable inside and horn and airbag are all ok now, I still however have the angle sensor fault and it will not calibrate it, I've been on diagnostics to check the read out of the sensor and its permanently on 0 leading me to believe its not picking it up, am currently checking the wiring as someone may have yanked the steering wheel off and damaged one of the wires.

However I have noticed there are a number of codes for the same fault which must correspond to a specific fault?

My specific fault is the one highlighted

I don't know if this helps but I do get a fault all the time saying something like "Implausable signals from the steering wheel".
I think I have had that question on this forum.

The only thing i can think of is if the full rotation sensor has done a full turn and it doesnt like it?

Either that or its screwed because its aligned correctly, put on straight with the wheels and just wont calibrate, fails on the 1st step when you turn ignition off then on.

Is there any way to reset the sensor electronically as well as manually? I dont like binning things if I dont have to especially when it looks perfectly fine

I guess You have already run the calibration sequences in DAS! Turning the wheel an number of degrees to eather side.

Yes, it doesn't even get to the point where it asks you to turn the wheel, its as if its not detecting the sensor at all although if that were the case the fault would be different at a guess (Maybe the fault at the top of the above picture?), I've gone into the current value screen in DAS and the angle sensor just shows '0' even when the wheel is turned, need to check the wiring from the connector at the angle sensor end and at the ESP ecu (I'm assuming the sensor wires directly into it) to make sure its not damaged. It could also be that if the sensor is turned too far and the value is out of range it may show '0' as default?

To snap the ribbon cable it must have been turned anticlockwise (If i remember the direction of the ribbon cable correctly) way too many times so may have made the full rotation sensor do a complete turn and caused it to have a spaz? Might try as a last resort taking it apart again and clockwise it so the full rotation sensor does a full turn and try.

I'm determined to get it working and not replace it

Have you manually centered the sensor by making sure its on the 3rd revolution before mounting the wheel?

                Re: Steering angle sensor

Is there any chance that a previous owner had a paddle shift steering wheel fitted which has been removed?

If this is the case then maybe the connector in the footwell hasn't been swapped back to the normal wheel connector.

It is entirely possible as its a previous cat C (cant see any signs of damage tho??) both airbags were showing faults, repairing the ribbon has fixed the drivers just the passengers to look at when i get time.

Thanks for the info will deffo look into it! It had a black tridion so i imagine paddles wernt standard, doesnt mean they wernt added tho i suppose

If you are not getting any signal on DAS (Star) I would check the wiring (particularly the fine ones from the steering wheel connector that run out along the steering column), but suspect the angle sensor, Usually if it is not correctly aligned you can at least clear the fault until the first time it is driven.

I've had Cat D's with more damage than Cat C's, there seems to be little logic in these decisions sometimes. May be worth checking for dents caused by wheel/s being pushed back behind front inner fenders, (usually inconsequential and common in front enders). I had a Cat C fortwo that only needed a wishbone and front wing!!! (about £150 + paint)

                    Cheers!

My forfour was a cat D and that was worse, had a good look anyways and everything looks ok. Is just a pain trying to sort all this out as the car is 80 miles away!

Have told my dad to just sort the oil leak out, get the bluetack out to cover the lights up and mot the bugger so i can get it up by me and then ill have more time to mess!

Got my dad to check and the white plug is connected, back to the drawing board!

I was under the impression that You have the steering wheel with the paddles!
In that case the black plug should be connected!

Mine is the non paddle wheel and the white connector is plugged in, according to fq101 this is correct?

You can forget the white/black connectors under the dash.
It has nothing to do with the steering angle sensor at all.
All it does is to route the horn signal: to the SAM in case
of no paddle shift, or to the instrument cluster if paddle shift.
