Yep, as said, there are no drums.

Yes the ABS would kick in if the wheels locked but the smart also has electronic brake distribution.

Not sure from the photo that they have retained the original drum for the handbrake, only adding the disc between the drum and wheel? Then it's just a calliper hanger and a pipe re-route - simple!

I want to do away with the drum and back plate altogether and use a combined brake/handbrake calliper from a Ford Focus. Much lighter and the inertia resistance is reduced.

Looking forward to your fitting guide for more pictures.

We fitted Hi Spec 4 pots to a Roadie 4 years ago and did some comparisons at Bruntingthorpe.

They actually increased the stopping distance when you stood on the brakes and squealed like a stuck pig.

Hi Spec sent us all manner of things to get them to work properly for a while and then they simply lost interest.

A lot of money went down the drain and the set up seriously upset the brake force distribution.

I can think of far better ways to blow £1800. A Roadie with well bled and adjusted brakes with Tarox G88 disks and EBC green pads is braking Nirvana on a Roadie. it leaves the brakes well balanced and very effective.

Hi Spec were very obliging when we parted with the thick end of £1000 but far less than helpful when we simply couldn't get them to work well. They did look the dogs dangles but failed to deliver in a big way.

Rear shoes on a Roadie get changed normally between 60,000 and 80,000 miles which shows you how little work they actually do so why on earth risk locking up the rear end on a slippy road after you've confused the heck out of the ABS and ESP with an over braked rear. Once a Roadie gets sideways in a big way you are heading for the hedge or something coming the other way.

I'm going to have to agree with smartsrus on this one. It's a bit like fitting massive 18" wheels on a roady - looks great but ruins the ride.

Just put some some dummy discs on if you want aesthetics - waits for the crescendo of derision.

Again, agree with Paul. Decent discs & pads with fresh brake fluid, no air in the system and braided hoses (if you really need a bit more bite) would be a much better way to stop a Smart! The rears on lil.smartie are 10 yrs old 135,000 kms and still don't need changed, they were adjusted not too long ago and still look & work perfectly fine!

We have a few customers who often track day their roadies and none of them feel the need for rear discs, I think this is more of a 'well bigger cars have them so they must be better' thing!

If people are seriously thinking about doing this mod, the ONLY kit worth fitting is the Movit kit. www.movit.de

You will need 17" alloys to fit this kit on fortwo or roadster & its only made to order.

The price is around 2,800 Euro + fitting.

As said by Wellsmart & SRu above there really is no point to this mod, you are better off upgrading the front discs and pads....

At the end of the day, its your wallet and what you feel you need or want.

Okay but modding ain't necessarily about being what is best , what is needed , whats value for money or what is more practical , it's about being different , trying something new , having people come up to you at a smart meet going " are those really working discs on the rear ? "

And let's face it the independents wouldn't have half as much business if people kept the car as standard ..... would you !

The only reason you'd want these is if you do alot of 100mph to very little speed, hard, repeatedly... In a committed lap of the Nurburgring - and I mean committed here - you can get them to start grumbling at the back quite a bit, very little loss in braking ability if at all, but doesnt sound right... You would not get the same problem with discs, though I'd reccommend making sure they were cool enough (this is the drums problem) and making sure they're pathetic sized calipers with very little brake bias at all, let the fronts do the vast majority of the work...

Cool, love these little racers... rear disks, single pot calipers - custom subframe with R1 engines.... not bad.

The Smart Cup cars have R6 engines in though! Those guys are nuts too, in the office there is a pic of Sidi getting out of a Smart on it's back window then look through to the workshop and it looks fine! Sidi got out with no injuries either!

I think the point it is rear discs are needed in some track applications but as Paul said it actually makes everyday driving worse than with the shoes & drums, I don't think that's the case with any other mods that indies do on a daily basis!
