  • Girl in need of service advice!

    Hi guys,

I've been a loomer on here for a while, and you all seem so knowledgable I just couldn't help crying out for help on this one...

    (first post flattery over)

My Smart is in need of a service, 'B' type apparently and Mercedes want £260 all in. I didn't think this seemed too bad but Prestige can do it for £120...am I right to think that Merc will definitely do everything they should and go with them even though it's more? Or will Prestige be just as good?

I need it to be right as just recently my oil light has been flicking on...but only when I go around tight corners. I checked the oil and the dipstick was clean I put in 1/2 a litre (like a goog lil manual reader) and still nothing. I put the other 1/2 a litre in and now it's just showing on the dipstick. Little off topic I know but am I murdering my gorgeous 2003 fortwo by not topping up immediately?

Any help would be gratefully received!!!

In a word, Yes, the oil light is an oil pressure light, not an indicator of how much oil you have in your engine!!! You had at least 1.5ltrs of oil too little in your engine, if the oil light comes on it means the oil pump is trying to pump air round the engine not oil!

in answer to your other question
I'd rather take it to Prestige than Merc

In retrospect, I suppose "supercalafragalisticexpialadocious" wasn't a great "safe word..."

agree with john. Best thing to do in future is to check your oil every 1000 miles or more and top up as neccessary. But remember that between min and max is only 0.7litres so dont put too much in.

As for service, check with both dealer and pristege, that it is a B service and they are replacing the spark plugs as needed. 120 seems very cheap so just make sure everything is included, and if it is then go for it. But it does sound like they've quoted an A service

Oh and welcome to the site! Ask as many questions on here as you want, you will always get an answer. We all want to keep smarts running well!

On the main Forum it just says "Girl in need of service" (cuts the rest off) , & at first I thought the letter 'A' was in the sentence too .

            Hello and to Maniacs.

I'd always go to an Indie and not MB......

Re: Girl in need of service advice!

The quality of both main dealers and independants can vary enormously. I've had bad experiences at both, and my next service will be at a Smart main dealer, so they aren't all bad.

Best way to check is to do a search on the place you're thinking of going to in the servicing section of Smartmaniacs; this is where people share experiences and opinions and may better allow you to make a decision about where the best place to go is.

                Good luck!

                  :agree::exactly:

I had a service from an independent garage which cost a bit more than £260, they did less than the work smart describes on the website and they did it pretty poorly (my brakes didn't work to well after work on it and I had to bring it back again).

Now I won't write publicly who it was, I send you a PM instead.

Link to independent garage worksheet (note that I don't have aircondition!)

:agree: Unfortunately I live in a flat without a garage. Wouldn't be a problems back home in Germany where my dad has a garage and all necessary tools. But driving to Germany for a service - now that would be silly...

Re: Girl in need of service advice!

If I had indy that dealt with smarts I would get it done there but I am left with the very good treatment of Merc, which has to be said their labour charges are only slightly higher than the local garage my dad gets his cars done at.

So far I have only had a good experience with Smart/Merc always helpful and friendly.
