Hello, I am new to this site and was thinking of getting a smart car. I went for a test drive in a 2002 smart pulse and noticed that when changing gear from 1st to 2nd etc there is a loud noise from the back of the car. The garage said that this is the turbo kicking in. Does this happen every time you change gear as it is a bit off putting.

You'd struggle to hear the turbo under any conditions on a standard car, what sort of noise are you hearing? A whining noise or a clunk/bang? As Fudge says, walk away, smells like dealer BS and an unwell car.

Hi,
The noise was a clunk. The guy at the garage said it was the turbo and the ''dump'' There was no noise when the car changed down gear.

Get a £1000 discount when purchacing the car as you will need it to get the engine rebuilt later!

I bet when you start asking the Dealer about service history and how they come to have the car. Can they reproduce the noise whilst the car is stationary so you can watch the engine whilst it does it? If it is the turbo that is making the noise then yes, you could get the car to reproduce the noise when you rev it! You will suddenly find that there is a sudden lack of knowledge.

To be honest, I would go with Fudge's comments and WALK AWAY and find another car.

The noise happens on changing through the gears from 1 to 6. I've just spoken to the person selling the car and she says that the noise has always been there and it is the turbo and that it can be heard from outside the car as well.

is it a dump valve? like a "ppsshhhtt" noise? as opposed to a clunk? because as has been said, there should be no clunks (ever).

After reading other posts I think it was a kind of phhht sound but it did seem very noticeable and happened every time the gears were changed up

With the car stationary, rev the engine to beyond 3000 rpm and take your foot off the accelerator pedal suddenly - did it make the noise you are talking about?

You could always have a look at:-

and see if you can find the same thing in the car you are looking at. That would tell you that it has a dump valve fitted and would also explain the noise.

I'm suprised the garage doesn't know what a dump valve is, if I'm honest.
It's pretty basic knowledge, and by no means smart specific.
Dare I ask which garage this is? (is it a smart garage?)

Its not a smart garage. just one that sells second hand cars, does repairs and mots. I spoke to the people there and they said it was the turbo on the test drive and another mechanic said it was the turbo and dump valve.
