I phoned the seller tonight and she said the car has always made that noise and that it is the turbo which can even be heard outside of the car itself and she has had the car since april last year.
Well I doubt she'd say otherwise, she's the one trying to flog you the thing!
I think we've established where the noise is coming from, (but again, get someone to verify this) - check it over mechanically as thoroughly as you are able, drive it again and then make your own judgement call on whether you want to make an offer - then do an HPI (£20) before parting with any hard-earned.

Have you any Idea how much it would cost for it to be removed?

They would've fitted one as standard if it did - some cars have recirculating (much quieter than VTA) BOVs as standard to prevent the turbo stalling when changing gear (turbo spinning and no where for the charge to go, which would stall the wheel - opening up the BOV allows the turbo to keep spinning rather than stalling) - the smart engine/turbo is a different kettle of fish, quite a good write-up here:

You could do that yourself, it's an extremely simple device - failing that a mechanic shouldn't charge more than an hour's labour + any replacement pipes that have been hacked up.

it's 2 hose clips and the replacement pipe.
I wouldn't pay anything for the replacement pipe! lol, as they're very oftern removed to change them.
One of the garages like smarts r us or wellsmart might be able to get you a cheap replacement, it wont be much at all.
you can buy 2 new clips for what? £4 from half wits or re-use the existing ones?
and it'll take about 5 mins to swap back (if you don't have to remove the back of the car (10 minutes if you do )
from here it's just the top pipe you need to change.

That was quite an interesting link. So really it boils down to whether the car is worth buying or not as it only has 35,000 miles on the clock and was registered in jan 2002.

Have you seen the service book/record yet ?

(and again don't tell me the garage have it )

Apparently it has just had an mot done as well as a service.

                        really ?

                        no surprise there then

I'd walk away from this one if it was me

okay, so Jan 2002 will make it an 01 mk5 car.
£2300 won't be a spectacular deal, there are quite a few for sale at that region.

There are better deals out there, I paid less for a 53 plate...

Just had a service eh? By the same people who couldn't give a definitive answer on the DV?

Who's betting the bottom plugs are two years old?

There are thousands of used cars out there, it's a buyers maket and there's a recession on. If ANYTHING AT ALL is wrong with a used car walk away - there'll be one down the road with less miles & less issues for less money.
