That ForTwo+2 probably isn't that accurate, Auto Express is a comic mag anyway :p . Smart had the right idea with the original ForFour, it was just based on the wrong mitsubishi, should have been based on the i car.

                Re: NEW Smart ForFour

i have read this with interest and the forfour is a smart we have a 451 fortwo as well and i would say to anyone that gives my Forfour a slating "at least i dont have to rebuild the engine every 40k-60k lol guess smart made the forfour a little to well for some peoples taste lol pls note thats why we bought the 451 as well. and yes we had the roadster and 450 so we can say that lol

no disrespect to anyone but the forfour is now a rare future classic and will and are every bit as iconic as any other smart, its been said on another site that forfours are unwelcome at some shows lol as if any forfour owners going to care if somebodys offended by their car, id still go to a smart show regardless of who liked it or didnt, we know we are driving a real smarts. so long live all the smart range whatever your tastes as they are all fun funky cars made for people to enjoy and have a great community you only have to go to brooklands to see that.

The people who think forfours aren't smart cars also think that roadsters are sports cars so why worry

the car us awesome and my BRAB is the most mexhanically sound car I have ever owned!!

                  Steering gives good feedback
Ride is firm and rattle free
                  looks are ageless
                  spec is massive
                  engines are bomb proof

pop across to www.forfour.co.uk and say hello

                    Re: NEW Smart ForFour

Forfour is not a future classic. Classics earn there tag through either technical proficiency (eg Lancia Fulvia), ground breaking layout and hence new market position (eg original Mini) or as a performance rarity (eg Focus RS).
The forfour is none of these and from the Mercedes stable it is the A-Class and fortwo that are the future classics on the basis of being a exponents of the first factor. The Roadster will gain respect because of rarity and the blend of performance and economy they offer is unique.

I have nothing against the forfour, but it is no more a classic than a Nissan Arna.

Obviously not a regular visitor to "classic car shows". If I go to one this summer and there's a lovingly restored Nissan Arna I shall be looking with interest. A classic to most of us is something old, rare, and beautifully restored.
In time lots of Forfours will be scrapped and broken up for spares on the grounds of economics and they will become rarer. It only takes time for cars to become classics. Maybe I should have kept my old Standard 8

No maybe I don't. But I do know the difference between classic and merely rare.

                            Re: NEW Smart ForFour

Roadster does not have performance!! And I have never heard of a car becoming a classic for it's economy

                            haha!!

It's very hard for anyone to determine what car will become a classic - if it was easy, i'd be making money out of classics!!

...and no one said the forfour IS a classic!!

There are many cars that have become classics for many many reasons (none of those listed above) - Citroën ds, vw beetle, Renault 5 turbo, 2cv, mgb??

                              Re: NEW Smart ForFour

I sometimes flick through Practical Classics car magazine. I'm sure I'd quite enjoy owning many of the cars they feature, but I do look at those cars as being a bit different to the kind of cars then featured in Octane magazine, if you know what I mean.

So maybe one day the ForFour will be in Practical Classic, but I'll still be desiring the cars in Octane.

BLEND OF is what I said.

If you can't spot a classic, well. Here's how: They will have been highly thought of in their own time, and/or are so obviously different in their time.
What stops us prospering is the lack of spare cash and storeage facilities. In any case the money making isn't always equal to the interest accrued had the money been in a bank for the same period.
Now to your list of classics.
                                Citroen DS - technical proficiency
VW Beetle - ground breaking layout and hence new market position
                                Renault 5 turbo - a performance rarity
Citroen 2CV - ground breaking layout and hence new market position
MGB - a performance rarity ie affordable sportscar

Had the 2CV not been economical it would have failed. An economic classic then.

I think you'll find Storme37 said ''the forfour is now a rare future classic and will and are every bit as iconic as any other smart''

I think I see IS in there, and as classic in this context means old, 'future' is superfluous.

The Audi A2 has much greater claim to classic status than any forfour so far made, but it will struggle to make the grade as it doesn't get the respect in its own time that it deserves.

But forfour as classic on merit? Yeah, right up there with a Colt...
